Well, it turns out things have gone from bad to worse. All of our forum backups are bad. How is this possible? Well, as our forums grew large and bloated, our backups were timing out (on our host’s side) before completing, but we were never informed of this. Instead, we received a backup file which we assumed was good. It turns out they are all bad, with “unexpected end-of-file” errors.
We have to take the ultimate blame for not testing our own backups, and we do, but I cannot stress how disappointed we are with phpBB forum software right now. Lack of notification when backups were not completing properly, and no verification of data after a backup was completed. We will definitely switch to something else if we cannot restore this database.
Our only hope now is that our host may be able to restore a database for us from a few days ago. Cross your fingers!
Oh, and in case anyone reads this and thinks it affects our game(s), it doesn’t. This is our forums database we are talking about, not our game data. Our game data is triple-redundant backed up both on and offsite. Do not worry yourselves on this.
