Re: Automapping feature instead of requiring Cartography ski
I like that the map doesn't necessarily immediately become available at the first level, but what I WOULD like to see is the map detail retained even after "losing" cartography skill. I.e. after traveling through an area wearing a compass that gives me a cart. bonus, I shouldn't see that d...

Well, a teaser it is; consider me teased, and my appetite whetted. I'll be in line to DL this one.

Re: Character design strategy
I'd add one tidbit: in your leveling-up strategy, put points in Endurance early, if you haven't already at the start. You will gain more hitpoints each level-up. You might have to skimp on Dex and Str but you can use use spells/potions to help with that. And what a previous poster said about ranged ...

Re: Do you want loot/pick lock/disable trap to be changed ?
[quote="Evnissyen"] [The fact is that re-rolling is not only an inherent feature of the game but really pretty much necessary if you wish to have a good, well-equipped character. Since the game seems to assume that you're going to re-roll: re-rolling becomes necessary. . . . This feature a...

Re: Be honest - do you cheat, and how?
In the hopes that developers might look this far down in what has become a battle, I'll chime in on the original question: My first real run-through of Eschalon Bk I (after trying a build that didn't work) I became frustrated with a few locked doors and, as I had not enough money for a dozen lockpic...

Re: Just who is BasiliskWrangler?
BW: Interesting. In the short time you've been communicating with Eschalon fans in this forum, I almost feel like I knew all that already, especially the crowded room with 6 computers! But . . . surely you're going to let us know your opinion on the likelihood the Riemann Hypothesis is true . . . ? ...

Re: unarmed skill questions
I haven't done any math on it, but I can vouch for the relative ineffectiveness of unarmed combat as you progress. My second character was unarmed and after I got the skill up to ~15, it seemed like I was consistently doing less damage than my cleaving character had been. My Strength and Speed were ...

Re: Major skill and minor skill
Not to come across as a wet blanket, but I think this idea of Major and Minor skills would be way more trouble than it's worth. If the skill point awards for leveling up were the same for Major and Minor skills, then it's a simple matter of forcing each character to divide his skill point allotment ...

Re: * BOOK II COMBAT OPTIONS *
More thinking about this development: Might it be worth making these skills discovery/purchase events, like a book or lesson with an expert NPC (small fee, of course)? Not leveled like the other skills, but perhaps three tiers: none=normal attack only, basic level= 20% trade-offs, AC+x for Parry, ad...

Re: * BOOK II COMBAT OPTIONS *
I'm in favor of an act like switching weapons/equipment or drinking a potion carrying NO defensive bonus and prohibiting any of the proposed attack modes. Essentially, doing these things in combat would be like skipping a round, allowing active opponents a free hit at full potential. Parry is a grea...

Re: Need Good Fighter Build
's funny, I just picked up Eschalon again after a 6 mo. hiatus, and started a fighter for the first time. I put lots into Endurance (got to 30 before level 5) and Strength, but didn't skimp on Dex and Speed. Hide in Shadows 5 to make up for the fact that I had no ranged attack for the first 1/3 of t...

Re: Concerns about how "to hit" is calculated
My experience: I struggled with reconciling my perception with the "to-hit" percentages listed, but one day noticed that I frequently hit for no damage. Looking at the main screen, no blood, no floating numbers, I thought "d@^^n, missed AGAIN!! How can this be happening day after day?...

Mongolian: Be a little fair, here. You have spent the majority of this thread stating or implying that the design is faulty (not because it is unbeatable in a certain role-play class, but rather "boring") and when Akark describes how he managed a pure mage, you indicated that perhaps it wa...

Re: Do you want loot/pick lock/disable trap to be changed ?
And simple as saying well, just don't reroll dice or don't save over again, but this is how the game works. That's the same like in chess, if queens want to they can jump over pieces, but this is an optional rule. If it's possable, people wil use it. Mongolian, I'll jump in here and point out that,...
