Re: Interesting performance observation.
Sounds like the usual ATI story, sadly - great hardware, shame about the drivers. It wouldn't surprise me if the 64-bit drivers don't get nearly so much maintainance and optimisation effort as their 32-bit counterparts. Maybe W7 will be the kick up the arse that some hardware vendors desperately see...

Re: Eschalon: Book I Version 1.05 FULL
I have lots of games installed, and they all save in . directories. Hm, that would irritate the hell out of me, I can't stand flat structures, I put everything into hierarchies. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I guess it's just more evidence that it's always better for these things ...

Re: Eschalon: Book I Version 1.05 FULL
It's the way things are normally done on Unix like systems. Any files or folders that a user normally does not need to interact with directly are made "hidden" by adding a . in front. This also includes configuration files and the like. It will keep the overview clean when a user is brows...

Re: A complaint about the graphics!
The tiles in Book I were 52x52 pixels. Default screen resolution was 800x600. In Book II the tiles are 64x64 pixels, the default resolution is 1024x768. So, in terms of relative screen size, that means tiles have shrunk by less than 4% - that's basically the same size as far as I'm concerned. As an...

Hey a bit off topic question; Is it possible to download the soundtrack to book I in a format I can play in media player? Im not sure how to play the .ogg proprietary format. Media player as in the Microsoft Windows software? Or do you mean a portable MP3 player or similar? In the former case, you ...

Re: A complaint about the graphics!
Firstly, I agree that graphics are a secondary concern to plot and general enjoyment. However, I also appreciate that people's tastes differ, and that's fine - I also think that graphics, music and sound effects are nonetheless important in creating a fantastic gaming experience. In answer to your s...

Re: What programming language is Eschalon written in?
Sure, it's always going to be effectively impossible to beat C/C++ at raw speed, assuming your code's well-written. It's just the extra trickiness of porting to multiple platforms, and the fussiness of the code itself. Cross-platform libraries help a lot, but there are bound to be awkward occasions ...

Re: A List of RPGs
I've thought about either doing something like this, or Boot Camp, but I haven't 'pulled the trigger' yet. For those who might not have heard of it, Boot Camp is a piece of software that makes it easier for you to install Microsoft Windows on your Mac, alongside the native OS X. This means that whe...

Did you see the "Frequently Bought With" book? http://www.amazon.co.uk/Quests-Design-Theory-History-Narratives/dp/1568813473/ref=pd_bxgy_b_img_a Yes, I had a brief look. It seemed to be a little too dense for my tastes, as it talks a lot about history and literature, but I think perhaps t...

Re: Some balance feedback.
I thought the magic system in Book I was reasonably balanced in the earlier levels, but to some extent it did get progressively harder to become as effective as, say, an equivalent level fighter. I think magic is always really tough to balance in RPGs - it often seems to go the way of AD&D and b...

Re: Ubuntu 8.10 with Intel graphics game doesn't start...
Wow, that's fairly shocking - although more or less what I've come to expect from Intel over the years. In this day and age, major hardware vendors either need to develop their own full-featured closed-source drivers for Linux, or at least share all the information required to allow the open source ...
