Re: Critique of Eschalon - Learning Cliffs, and real strateg
Fine then, let me try arguing this on more common terms, and actually go into just plain judging the game as a whole, then... This game advertises itself on being a game that is fun for being tile-based, turn-based, and strategically difficult. That means that the game has to involve complex decisio...

Re: Critique of Eschalon - Learning Cliffs, and real strateg
Besides that, what I'm saying is not that there's no reason to put a skill point into skullduggery, but that if you can get that skill point for free from a trainer, rather than having to spend one of the few level up skill points you have on it, don't you ultimately just wind up with more skill po...

Re: Critique of Eschalon - Learning Cliffs, and real strateg
In fact, you exacerbated this need to min/max by making it so that it was impossible to cast any magic at all without putting points into attributes above their "natural" range, and even worse, forcing players to put in nearly 50 points to their Intelligence or Wisdom for all the spells, ...

Re: Critique of Eschalon - Learning Cliffs, and real strateg
I don't think game development is an industry. There is no formulae for a perfect game, no list of elements to choose, for me at least, games are art, their value is more than the sum of the elements. I'm not saying the mechanics aren't important, I'm saying the creator should not be obsessed with ...

Re: Critique of Eschalon - Learning Cliffs, and real strateg
Again, you have enforced min-maxing , Except he's not Like I said before I'm playing the game without min-maxing. Nothing is forcing me to. Quite the contrary, I feel the game forces me not to min-max as it because too easy if you do. Plus, let's not turn it into trolling, whether you like it or no...

Re: Critique of Eschalon - Learning Cliffs, and real strateg
In fact, I'd point to your own fans, here in this thread, and how they are, in protest to how I say the game offers such limited strategy, trying to offer up all the unpredicted, emergent gameplay behaviors they found - are you genuinely calling all those just mistakes on your part, that you wished...

Re: Critique of Eschalon - Learning Cliffs, and real strateg
(And I'm a she, not a he, but this is the interwebs and nobody knows for sure who or what anyone is - I could be, for all you know, a talking carrot from Alpha Centauri) My mistake, and my apologies. I try not to throw in pronouns until after I've confirmed someone's gender, but I obvious...

Re: Hide in shadow + Move silently
I don't actually think firespells have that effect. Logically speaking they would, but since your personal light level is low at both the end of the previous round and the end of the round in which you fired the spell, your stealth isn't broken. I've never seen it work that way at least, but correc...

Re: Critique of Eschalon - Learning Cliffs, and real strateg
Right, well, I was going to start on ways to better serve Exploration and Challenge, but I think what's discussed at the end of BW's last post deserves more immediate attention, because it's a bit of a game-changer. there is no such thing as over-analysis, there is only insufficient data to reach a ...

Re: Critique of Eschalon - Learning Cliffs, and real strateg
Reducing this into a "do I like this game or not?" discussion completely deflates the point of the discussion. The entire point of the exercise is not to have JUST personal feelings about things, but to strip away what are just emotional biases in gaming to understand how to rationally and...

Re: Critique of Eschalon - Learning Cliffs, and real strateg
I'll respond mostly just to munster, since he's one of the only ones genuinely trying to have a conversation. The thing about it is, Munster, I'm not saying it's a bad thing when you find a new strategy to use. In fact, it's a great thing. My problem is that the way that the game is currently set up...

Re: Critique of Eschalon - Learning Cliffs, and real strateg
OK, before I let myself get distracted responding to someone else, again... FOOD MECHANICS! I want to use this post to work down from these abstract high-level concepts I am talking about into the small-bore, so as to give people a better understanding of the argument I am making. To start with, how...

Re: Critique of Eschalon - Learning Cliffs, and real strateg
It sounds like you're saying that, because it is possible to beat the game with nothing but firebolts from a level 1 mage, that anyone who would choose to do anything different with the game to see how else the puzzles can be solved and what other tactics are available must be stupid. To answer you...

Re: Critique of Eschalon - Learning Cliffs, and real strateg
While I thank you in the interest in this thread - I know that not terribly many people will read all the way through one of the threads I write when I really get going - I do have to ask that you stay at least somewhat on-topic, since I'm focused pretty much entirely upon ways to make the gameplay ...

Re: Hide in shadow + Move silently
And what about probability of beeing spoted and attacked. Is there a chance that enemies could do that while i'm in shadow and stay still. As far as i noticed they atack after few my blows. Never without my agresion. Even if i attack, successful hit but deal no damage they are unable to strike back...
