Re: Avadon: The Black Fortress

I was playing on Hard and think it ramps up nicely enough. Die here and there, figure out how to beat it, proceed, get to another spike, etc. Hard seems to be his version of "normal" difficulty since he says his normal is made so most can finish the game like that.

Re: Avadon: The Black Fortress

Still only playing this. Best CRPG in some time. Doing the last companion side quest and a lot of shit has been happening so I guess I'm nearing the end of the game. Been through some pretty tough battles, and some cool sequences (not pictured, I always forget to take screens when it's all happening...

Re: Avadon: The Black Fortress

I only ever used the shaman in her own side quests. I made the sorceress my healer by giving her a scarab that has a heal party skill and also passing all the healing scrolls to her and generally keeping her out of trouble outside enemies that are particularly weak to magic damage. She's now wearing...

Re: Avadon: The Black Fortress

Man this game keeps getting better. I progressed some more, I did the Blademaster companion's side story, now I'm about to do the same for the Sorceress, she's super crazy and I'm like oh shit with what she's dragging me into. There may not be too many dialogues and choices outside smaller or bigger...

Re: Dragon Quest IX

I don't think grinding has been a problem with JRPGs since the early 90s, outside certain series that stick to their old school roots and have tough encounters that you either play smart learning the mechanics inside out or pass by overleveling with grinding. Still, almost any RPG with some explorat...

Re: Dragon Quest IX

I played it a little. It's cool but the story didn't grab me (although it probably gets better later, but I lost interest before that happened). The gameplay has nice novelties (for a JRPG) though, and it's fast paced, varied, and even challenging at times. I hope DQX keeps some of these features.

Re: Avadon: The Black Fortress

The game crashed while I was fighting a Drake as I attempted to cast Ice Storm. That sucked but I wasn't doing too great anyway, it's a weird battle that lasts a while. Before that in another quest I fought some kind of ghost that kept banishing party members. I won't explain what that does exactly,...

Re: Avadon: The Black Fortress

Edit: well, nevermind, I don't have any interest in talking you out of it. Whatever works for you, you could just try the demo, read a bit about how it progresses from the point the demo ends, and decide for yourself. You either like it or you don't. I do and don't find it lacking in exploration or ...

Re: Avadon: The Black Fortress

Yes, it's similarly linear, but unlike Icewind Dale so far it doesn't block access to previous areas, you can still go back and complete quests you left or explore areas you didn't. There have been a few choices here and there but so far they don't have any apparent effect outside your own morals, a...

Re: Avadon: The Black Fortress

I like it a lot. My first impressions based on the demo were these: I've been playing the demo quite a bit. I got the hang of it, levelled up a few times and saw how the core mechanics work. The game drew me in and I can already see the sinister potential the story holds under the rather straightfor...

Re: COMPREHENSIVE Book III 'Wishlist' (List form)

Party based combat, possibly with an action point system.
A more densely populated world (even if it has to be smaller).
More unique, special locations. Medieval villages and such get old.
Much bigger focus on characters, events, choices and consequences.

Re: CRPGs, where to start?

Story and/or choice heavy stuff: Baldur's Gate II & Expansion Fallout 2 Planescape Torment Arcanum After exhausting those if you need more you can play the previous BG and FO. For more combat heavy stuff, but still similar: Icewind Dale (the first mainly/only) & Expansion Temple of Elemental...

Re: Wallpapers?

Well I like the art they used for the intros and that's the kind of wallpaper I'd like to see in high res. A wallpaper isn't (necessarily) a screenshot or a trailer which are perfectly fine media to advertise the gameplay with, nor would anyone misunderstand and think it's trying to show gameplay, m...

Re: Wallpapers?

For the record, since you and Evnissyen (I guess you don't find the games' intros distinctive? I like them) seem to think I actually created those or something, I did not, they're just ideas of what I'm hoping to see from Wrangler. They're screenshots of the Book I and Book II intros, no touching up...

Re: Avadon: The Black Fortress

I don't care if they have walk animations and what not, I just hope they have them scroll by the tiles smoothly. And the camera scrolling to be smooth as well. It just feels so wrong for me otherwise... Well, actually, single-screen stuff like Desktop Dungeons and the allegro-made HeroQuest are ok w...
