Effect of ability scores -- research

I did some research into the effects of ability scores and discovered that some of the assumptions tossed about here are incorrect, particularly regarding the +1 every 5 or 10 levels of a score. Damage bonuses, to-hit bonuses, and armor rating bonuses are each determined by summing two different abi...

The reason I did not give a third option, is that if you find the walking speed adequate on your computer, obviously you can vote for the first one. My performance rating is fairly low and according to the game it's very good, but it's not at a 2 or 3 like somebody else mentioned. BW, what is the hi...

Speed vs graphics preferences

Since it seems Eschalon's very cool, detailed graphics are at least partly responsible for the relatively slow movement speed, perhaps this is a fairer question to ask.

Nicely said Loriac. You put it together much better than I did.

I find it confusing that every time someone says the walking speed is slow, the first response is to check the performance rating. Let's face it: even with a low (good) rating, the walking speed is slow. It's slow compared to any other RPG out there. It may be a legitimate and reasonable speed, but ...

Class and race don't NEED to be involved to have multiple successful character paths. The Avernum / Geneforge series -- a common point of comparison for Eschalon, it seems -- both use similar variations on a skill point engine. Although they are (mostly) party-based, singleton play is common, and as...

Slarty, the essence of the game from the old school era is the min-max build, as Tom/BW has pointed out. I actually disagree with this. This is true in the sense that min-maxing stats was always important. However, most old school era games had a tiny number of stats you could customize, instead gi...

All roads lead to Rome / Limitations of character mechanics

Although I like the character engine in Eschalon, I'm starting to realize that simple efficiency pushes all builds in the same direction. Although it's certainly possible to play other types of characters than the one described here, the only incentive to do so is role-playing in your head; the game...

Is a Pauper allowed to use skill trainers? The description doesn't seem to disallow them, but they would make the challenge significantly easier.

No game is perfect, and you always have to accept something that's not up to your standards, whether it's in the realm of graphics, mechanics, plot, play control, or whatever. Different standards are more important for different people. What is a minor annoyance to one person might be a major frustr...

The older Ultima games, as well as Realmz and all of the Avernum games, were/are indie games programmed by a single person. Not that it's relevant. It's not an issue of prejudging the game and then whining. Everyone who's complained about movement seems to agree that the game looks great otherwise. ...

8-direction control is nice, but you could just use the directional arrows if keymaps are an issue. (Probably having them make you move in diagonal directions onscreen, which are the straight directons for the grid.) You don't really need to move in the other directions that much, so it isn't that m...

The problem is not comparing Eschalon to Diablo. The problem is comparing Eschalon to the old-school games that inspired it. None of them play this slowly. Ultima and Wizardry weren't this slow. Console derivatives like Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy weren't this slow. PC derivatives like the Gold...

Why No Keyboard Movement?

Sorry if this topic has been brought up and addressed before, as I've only just played the game. But I find this very confusing. I just downloaded Eschalon and gave it a whirl. The game looks beautiful, with one frustrating exception that I just can't get past. Why am I forced to use the mouse for m...
