The better quality bows last longer when you use the feat and with higher damage you can usually kill your target with one shot. Until then, I rotated bows to keep them from breaking.

They do serve the purpose of draining your missile weapons. Which hurts a lot at the start.

The challenge depends upon the character class and how experienced you are. But that roll is exceeding the odds.

Take the damage and go after them. Eventually they can't retreat from you and like some other enemies they don't take fire damage and die taking the experience with them.
But be sure to remove foot and leg armor so you don't accidentally have them destroyed while in hot pursuit.

1. You have a resistance chance, but if you fail then you get stunned so have lots of health. 2. Only equipped items give resistance and the damage comes off your foot and leg armors. The egg shaped nest is in the center of the northern edge after following a lava river. You have to walk on some lava to get to it.

The sad part is that there is no shortcut for going back down again. Plus you have to avoid/fight any monsters and dwarves that you left alive the first time.
