I like the sound of this Thomas. Balancing the skills to be usefull for different character builds seems like a tough testing task.

I hope your not going to limit non base class types to much though because I like playing a fighter\ranger\rogue combo most of the time.

Actually, I think a combination of predetermined Class skills and "Skill Tagging" (a la Morrowind or Fallout) might be the best idea. Give the class a couple of skills normally associated with it, and give the option of "Tagging" a couple more so that someone who wants to create a hybrid class could do so. Lets say the Fighter gets Swords and Heavy armor as starting skills, then he can tag Bows and Hide in Shadows to suit his style of gaming. Or, give more major skills to each class (ex. 4), but give the option of creating an "Custom Class" (aka "Adventurer" ^_^) and choosing 4 skills to tag as "Major Skills."
