I got Book 1 years ago but never finished it, Today I got Book 2 and 3 and wanna complete them all.
I am guessing your character or save file imports into book 2 from 1 etc
If I create a character and mess him up will I have to restart the game as my character can be too messed up to complete the game?
If that is the case what is a good starting build to play through?

You start each game creating a character from scratch. It is possible to make the games very hard to play if you spread your skill points around too much.
