Hello everyone,

Version 1.05 is ready. Here are the changes:

+ Compiled using the latest version of the development language
+ Added improved graphics initialization code.
+ Game no longer crashes if you threaten to kill Gruzz.
+ Game no longer crashes if Siam attacks you.
+ Vista defaults for DirectSound driver useage, fixing rare audio glitches on some computers.
+ NPCs and monsters should no longer get stuck off-screen.
+ Creatures no longer spawn in rocks/trees.
+ Improved control for single-button mouses.
+ Barrels now show up as violet dots on the automap.
+ Several Map Fixes.
+ Main menu (demo version) now has the updated purchase links.
+ Added missing map files into demo install.
+ Added code to deal with trying to load a saved game outside the demo region.
+ Made a small change to the map_load function to hopefully reduce or eliminate the occasional error when the player is oddly positioned when loading a game.

See the demo links on the Eschalon: Book I game page:

linux: ubuntu x32-64 Intrepid Ibex...
Game won't start unless I run using sudo...and when I do, this is what I get:

Windowed:

NVIDIA: Direct rendering failed; attempting indirect rendering.
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 6410 requests (6188 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

The game ran, but had some funkiness (as in fonts being messed up, not funkiness as in Grand Master Flash...)

Full Screen -- complete failure to run:

NVIDIA: Direct rendering failed; attempting indirect rendering.
X Error of failed request: GLXBadDrawable
Major opcode of failed request: 143 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)
Serial number of failed request: 2054
Current serial number in output stream: 2054
Locking assertion failure. Backtrace:
#0 /usr/lib32/libxcb-xlib.so.0 [0xf7a997c7]
#1 /usr/lib32/libxcb-xlib.so.0(xcb_xlib_lock+0x2e) [0xf7a9996e]

#3 /usr/lib32/libGL.so.1 [0xf7e0bcb2]
#4 [0x9ad0ba0]

It should be noted, however, that I run a totally weird setup...Display 0 on this linux box is actually a Sony Bravia 32" 1080p HDTV...Display 1 is an NEC monitor. This could TOTALLY be a failure on the primary display device...

I can dink with it some more later but for now I'll switch back to my Mac and enjoy a 2006 Navarro Correas Argentinean Malbec....

Hey Hawkwind- can I get you to download the Linux demo from a link on this page. These are the 1.04 demos and I am curious to know if the problem exists for you in the previous build.

If the bug does exist in earlier builds on your setup, I'll assume it's your setup...if not, we have to assume it's the new compile.

...oh, and offering to bring by "sexy" wine? I do believe you've had one glass too many of this 2006 Navarro Correas Argentinean Malbec.

I wouldn't be surprised...if there's a geek-tweek..I'll prolly need it. I'll try it on all three of my Ubuntu machines....

Um, yeah, sorta... Ok. Way the heck too much. But don't hold that against me. I threw a constitution check and I'm good to drive! (KIDDING!)

OK, played the demo for about an hour.

- Control-clicking during character creation process now WORKS! - successfully sold back skills this way
- Shift- & control-clicking now WORKS! - allows one to successfully cast offensive spells against NPCs (Garrett had to die though...  )

Most of the other things discussed, like the Gruzz & Siam crash obviously can't be tested, as I could only tool around South & North Parishes.

I will report, however, that weird things happen if you attempt to directly load previously created characters from the opening menu in the demo: sometimes the old character will appear mostly darkened-out in a void (this may have something to do with the time-of-day in that character's game at the time of the last save) and when attempting to pull up the menu window, the demo crashes. Other times, loading old characters in a game previously running with my "new" character would lead to weird things like the old characters appearing in the same spot as my "new" character but not being able to move, or my old characters being loaded in the middle of the ocean!

I don't know if you consider these things to be a big deal, but I thought I should let you know...

Since this is only the demo, you are trying to load a character that is saved outside of the demo's free areas (hence the black void). There should be an error box telling you this. Let me see if I can get something in place.

Thanks for checking it out.

I'm running the Mac version of the demo v1.5 and I've had two strange problems.

The first is the East Salt Coast area is no longer loading and I get a message that I need to register the game for an area that appeared in the original demo.

Second, twice when I reloaded the game from a save file so I could try for better loot, the game reloads in a different part of the same zone. Once in the water north of the Smithy when I was in the swamp to the south and for a different save I'm a few squares northwest of my old location and trapped in the woods.

I'm also running on a Mac and noted the same problem. I also noted that the message that my weapon had broken did not come up, though I did get the 1 point of damage, when I was trying to break a chest.

Also, Eversleep Cemetery is not in the demo. I don't recall if this was always true, but it seems to me I was able to find the amulet in my original walk-through before buying the game.

Mac version.

I can't get into Eversleeping Cementary's lower level too. I know that is in the demo.

I got a third time where a reload brought me to a different location. But several other reloads of the same saved game were to the right spot.

On windows, hotkeys don't work if caps lock is on. Not a bug really, but a little annoyance.
