I recently bought this game on the recommendation from a friend and I have been playing a Magic-User. I do not find the game very hard but the amount of time it takes to regain Mana is pretty outrageous. I have been investing very heavily into Perception (85 now) and Meditation (22) but I do not regenerate any faster than 1 point every 3 steps.
I'm near the end of the game now and I have over 400 mana. My adventuring day involves spending all my mana to kill two Taurax then camping for 18+ hours. God forbid I get interrupted by more Taurax while I sleep, or I have to hit the space bar for 15 minutes straight to avoid ambushes.
So how can I get better mana regeneration? I have not noticed an increase in a while and every level I am desperately hoping for an improvement. If my mana regeneration is somehow maxed, at what point did it get maxed and why on earth must regeneration take so incredibly long?

The mana regen rate is a balancing issue, really. In Book II, the mana regeneration rate for mages was increased significantly (maxing at about 5 per round), which makes mages uberpowerful. Somewhere in between is probably the sweet spot.
