I think this is one of those details we may not find the answer to until the end... perhaps after Book III... or with a "Collectors Edition" it would be cool for BW to include some "Making of Eschalon" developer notes that shed soem light on these little mysteries.
** Edit ** BW's done a great job of keeping a lot of the details under wraps. Even when I was helping out with some of the in game text for Book II, he wouldn't give me all of the information about some of the plot/story/etc. After all, you never know who's going to be... loose lipped when the discussions start. Plus it still gave me that extra incentive to keep playing the game... ^_^

"E" could be a reference to Baldur's Gate. The anonymous letter to Gorion is signed by "E".
