Dancing Lights and Support Spells in Book 1

Post by VDK » September 5th, 2013, 4:40 pm

Is dancing lights a somewhat viable spell to assist with melee. Im finishing up playing Dungeons of Dredmor which is another favorite and thought of making an fighter/mage character. I think that as long as he can rely on spells for disabling or knocking enemies out, his melee will be aided.
Are any of the early spells useful in the category of that? I don't want to make a mage rather just a warrior that somewhat uses what he has to make things simpler. It doesn't have to work on all enemies but it would help if most was the answer.

Dancing lights works a bit, but you are better off avoiding getting swarmed with enemies so you don't waste mana trying to buy time. The main complaint with Book 1 mages is the speed with which you burn through mana requiring either retreating in a large circle or using mana potions to replenish mana to finish the fight.

When fighting a melee attacking monster a range attacking mage will win, but if the monster can attack at range, then you need to have lots of mana to take them out quickly.

So then are there any support spells with regards to "assisting" in combat? I've only used melee and ranged characters but never with magic attached. I wanted to try something where they use magic to knock out or knock down the enemy and then plan the next move. That worked out great in Dredmor.

Actually a ranged character desperately needs magic in Eschalon. The spell "Predator Sight," for example, allows you to hit foes in dark dungeons and at night. You can't hold a torch while shooting a bow and arrow. The trait Divination is loaded with useful buffing spells that you will greatly appreciate.....

There are a number of spells that can help melee and ranged characters, from buffs like Ogre Strength, to damage adds like Enkindle Weapon, to spells like Sonic Blast that can (at least at early levels) stun multiple opponents allowing you some free rounds to beat on them. That's in addition to helpful spells like Predator Sight as well as Cat's Eyes for seeing somewhat better in the dark. Combining Cat's Eyes with any other light source turns a dark dungeon area into essentially daylight.
