What are you currently playing?

Post by MyGameCompany » March 9th, 2018, 2:10 pm

This is in response to BW's invitation on the front page (http://basiliskgames.com/update-please/) to "stop by our forums and let us know what you’re currently playing!"

I bought myself a Nintendo Switch right after Christmas, and I played through Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (one of my first games on that platform). I just finished it last week (190+ hours), and I really enjoyed it. I found it to be more linear than Xenoblade Chronicles X (which I absolutely loved), in that you couldn't go anywhere you wanted in the world right from the start. You could freely visit most areas you had already been to, but new areas only became available as you progressed the main story. However, the story is good, the characters are delightful, and the whole world concept (people living in/on massive titans) was very intriguing. I'm looking forward to playing through the new Game Plus mode, after I take a little break from it.

Right now I'm playing Breath of the Wild. I'm about 8 hours into it. Very different style of RPG than XC2, but I'm really digging it. I love the big open world concept, and the game mechanics are a lot of fun. I've found myself laughing at so many situations, and being able to pull off some really crazy stunts/tactics. Combat is getting insanely difficult now that I've left the Great Plateau, but I'm learning to steer clear of the baddies until I get some better gear and more hearts.

I'm also planning to pick up Avernum 3 soon. Spiderweb games are always winners!

I have been playing some of the new Final Fantasy, but I'm not too much into the storyline. It's definitely more of an R&D type of play through.

Not too long ago I finished Might & Magic X: Legacy, which I really liked even though it wasn't well received critically. It felt like a classic RPG and I had quite fun with it.

I also am playing some Doom (the 2016 version) because it is a marvelous game to study- the interface and visual effects are flawless.

Im replaying spiderwebs Avernum Escape from the pit as i realized i have 3 and never played 2. (*aslo never finished escape ha ha) So depending if the game holds my attention, will decide if i buy the second and even play the third. (so far i dont remember the 19 hrs it said i played before so thats good, and i played at least 6 to 9 hrs yesterday so theres that)

Played a bit of the FFxv.(tutorial, didnt get thru it yet) cant remap the controls or the game crashes and hangs. playing w default controls is ok but for my left handed play can be a bit of a pain. I hate controllers, if i was using one id have a ps4 ha ha.

Slay the spire catches my attention off and on as well. Ive unlocked nearly all the character "levels" that are available at this time and still cant get through the second boss yet. Having the correct mix of cards and being lucky enough to draw them when needed can be a pita. Its one of those games i play for hours, quit for days, and play again.

Was restarting ARK but its the only game that blue screens my PC after a few hrs of playing. It does a memory dump, and im not the only one whos had it, so i think its something in the game somewhere, but others never see it. Got it twice(different playthroughs, different days) so i gave up on it and uninstalled it again to make room for Far Cry 5 at the end of the month

Lastly, reinstalled Dying Light. Man i love the parkour in that game, its nearly perfect.
The armies joined in a bloody battle on this fine day, then storm clouds broke, and it rained.

So they all went home.---Story knots within blatherbeards Beard.

I just finished with Horizon Zero Dawn and its DLC, The Frozen Wilds. I really liked it. To give you an idea of how much, it was the first game--ever--that I acquired 100% completion on my first playthrough. I have never actually earned a platinum trophy before until now. And as a general rule, I don't like open-world games. But I couldn't put this one down.

I think what I liked best was the story and characters. I later learned that the head writer worked on New Vegas, and it really showed. I like the overall message of the story, that empathy and compassion are what are needed to save the world.

I bought myself an Oculus Rift, and my wife liked the look of it so much, we bought her one too. She still hasn't played much though, and the last couple of months mine's also been sitting around, connected to nothing (I've moved my desktop into the living room for my wife to use with the Rift, and I purchased a new Alienware Laptop that I use for mine). I played it a lot when I had it hooked up, though.

Problem is, I've been on the road from Thursday -> Tuesday almost every week since before Thanksgiving. I'll get a weekend off here and there but video games haven't really been fitting into those windows. E.g., This coming weekend I'll be driving the fam to Chattanooga, TN for a couple of days, then I'm flying with the wife to Atlanta to see a concert on Sunday... then off to the next work destination (California, likely).

That said, I've been getting in some game time at the hotels... here's my current installed games (between moving, giving up my desktop, buying the Alienware, and having to send it out to service, I've wiped my library a couple of times):

My Time at Portia
Occupies most of my current game time... pretty fun Harvest-Moon style game; getting around is tedious (even after you install the "bus" system), but the mechanics are pretty simple and it's generally entertaining. Some future updates are supposed to add some much needed goodies, but hopefully they include mounts or controllable vehicles eventually.

Planetoid Pioneers
A physics based, semi-open world metroidvania. It's a mixed bag; it plays like it's still in early access. Graphics and mechanics are fun, but the physics feels super wonky at times, and after playing for 20+ hours I don't feel a huge sense of progress. Hopefully the studio gives this game a little more love than their last title.

Stardew Valley
The closest, most entertaining Harvest-Moon-a-like I've played yet. MTaP gets more playtime because it's new and shiny, but this one is my favorite thusfar.

Two Worlds II
Was going to get this on GOG when it was on sale, then I bought it on Steam instead. I used to own a physical copy, and for some reason had the urge to fire it up. I never really got very far, and I'm having a similar issue now... I played a lot more of the first, but the gameplay feels a lot more restricting for the second. Everything's just really slow-going. Might be time to bust out a different RPG, like Icewind Dale Enhanced.

Far Cry 4
After seeing the adverts for FC5, I realized I hadn't played 4 yet. Played FC3, and Primal, and you can absolutely tell this game came in between. Primal is newer, and the gameplay feels fresher, but there's something to be said for being able to blow things up. I do hope 5 really nails the co-op down... it's something I'd definitely like to try out. It's been years since I played some good co-op. I will say this though: after playing games in VR, regular FPSes just aren't the same.

Why the Oculus over an HTC Vive?
1. Cost. I got the kit (Rift w/built in audio, Controllers, 2 Sensors, 6 free games) for $300 on Black Friday. I added another sensor for roomscale tracking, so my total out of pocket, with camera mounts, and USB extenders , is under $450. Considering they have similar resolution/performance profiles, it didn't make a lot of sense to spend a ton more (Vive + Deluxe Audio Headstrap + extra lighthouse would set you back about $400 more - although you could argue the extra lighthouse isn't really necessary, so still $300 more). My next purchase will need to be cable channels though... gotta hide that mess! Also need to get TPC's wireless adapter for the headset... if it works right it'll be kickass.

2. Slightly lower performance requirements. This was a factor because I didn't want to spend an extra ~$500 on my laptop purchase to get the 1070 vs the 1060 (so also Cost, in a way). But that also means it's slightly less impacting on the games, which means slightly more framerates.

3. The controllers. I'm sorry, but trackpads are nifty and can be faster, but they just can't beat the feel and control of a good stick. The Rift controllers really nail it on the ergonomics, and make it easy for simple hand gestures.

4. John Carmack. Doom II still sits on the "Favorite Shooter of All Time" pedestal for me, and John's an amazing programmer.

**EDIT**

5. Roomscale - the Rift has smaller roomscale requirements vs the HTC (~10x10 vs 15x15). That way I can still have a desk in my office...

My only regret so far is Fallout 4 VR... thanks to Bethesda v. Oculus (in part due to Carmack), I feel like they're really dragging their feet on making the game compatible, and using hacks to get it to work with the Rift is just plain annoying. Other than that it's a blast to play. Just need that free time... here's to hoping they can shrink it all down and make it portable enough to throw in my backpack!

I'm playing through Torment: Tides of Numenera bit by bit, and wasting too much time on Civ V. Tried out Civ 6 on a free Steam weekend recently, but didn't like the new interface one bit. Getting ready for Pillars of Eternity II to come out in a month.

I'm about to finish Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. I don't think it's as good as Human Revolutions and a big problem with that is the story. Twenty hours in the story offers little surprises and I'm always one step ahead of Adam Jensen which is frustrating. Loading times are also horrendous for me in most areas and I was sick of seeing the subway.

I'll be playing Hollow Knight and Doom after this. Anyone that hasn't played Dark Messiah should, I had extremely good fun with the combat. You'll never tire of kicking people! Game is always on sale if £4.49 is too much for you.

stardew valley is THE game of its time. loved it.

Two worlds, doesnt matter 1 2 or whatever, they all have sucked ass. the gameplay was idiotic and un comprehensible. should have been better than any of the games were. good idea, shitty implementation.

im with you on 4. thought primal was gonna suck but it borought new life for me in far cry. 3 was almost perfect for the series. 4 was a blast but lacked something. ill say though, saw some VR gameplay for Skyrim and i dont think it was my thing. just looked awful and seemed to break immersion far more than mouse and keys do. and personally im not a fan of coop anything. cause most times i do better alone ha ha. will say though FC5 may break that for me as ive alredy got friends wanting to play w me. that said, ill be at a beerfest launch weekend.
