Game crashes when entering vault and saving - no support

Post by Variol »

I'm trying to go into the vault in Blackwater, but the game keeps crashing when I try to enter it. I've tried different save games to no effect. I was down there before I had the amulet with no problem.

It also crashes right after I save, if I don't wait a second or two after words.

I bought the game by way of download about a week ago.

I was given this email address when I bought it, which does not work for me: support@basiliskgames.com. Is there a working email address that I can send these issues to?

The game is good, but there is definitely some patching needed.

Well, first of all, Variol, you need to tell us the obvious: the specs of the machine you're running Eschalon on.

AMD Athlon 2500+ barton
1gig ram
256mb DeForce video

I don't think the specs really matter since I've been down there with other characters before and even earlier in this game with no problem: but there you are.

You seem to have an unique problem; no one else has ever reported a problem like you are describing, hence we must assume it is your computer that is at fault.

Have you rebooted your system recently? Do you have anything like disk compression turned on? Virus scanner? Are your video, sound, and chipset drivers up to date? Is your BIOS up to date? Is your OS all patched up?

Secondly, the support email is very much active. If you have sent an email there in the past 18 hours, I apologize- I am out of town and haven't had the oppotunity to go through emails yet.

So, explain to me how I have been down there 3 times with other characters and with my current character before I had the amulet, but now that I "need" to go down there, the crashes.

Sounds much more like a corrupt file to me. I have reinstalled the game, but it has made no difference with the current save games.

Perhaps I can email my save game file to someone and they can try it? If it works on their PC, at least we'll know something.

What might be better would be to post your save game on a hosting site and post the link here, Variol. That way, you could get several people checking this out to see what happens. Since it is such an unusual error, it would probably be a good idea to have as many people checking it as possible.

Ok, that's where it's saved.
It would be good to see if someone else has a save point there that I could
try on my PC.

Edit: That link always opens the folder. How do I select it without opening it?

Edit: I'm having a little trouble with that link. Can I just send it to an email via attachment?

Zip the folder up, variol. Then it will behave like a file - and it's be quicker to upload and download, too.

I emailed it to this address early this morning: support@basiliskgames.com

Will that be ok?

Yes, I got it.

You were right (my apologies for assuming your computer might be the problem). The map file is corrupt. Go into that saved slot and delete these files:

ug_reposit.ent
ug_reposit.map
ug_reposit.opq

and then load the game and enter the repository. Should work fine.

Thank you that did it!
I removed those files from the other save games as well, just to be safe.

What about the other issue with the game crashing if I try to move, or do something mediately after I save? This is something I do encounter with other games as well. I've gotten into the habit of just waiting a second or two, after saving, but is there something else I can do?

I just experienced the same thing when I entered Tangletree Ossuary. Would I delete the same files, or would it be different ones?

The Tangletree Ossuary files would be:

to.ent
to.map
to.opq
