Alchemy MIX window

AFTER about a year I started a new game in book 1 and could not remember how to get the mix window for alchemy potions. It is not mentioned how to do it in the manual and I think it ought to be. After fooling around a while and wasting a couple of hours I stumbled on the method which is to right click on an ingredient.
