old school Sci-Fi RPG?
old school Sci-Fi RPG?
Hi. I was wondering how viable would an old school sci-fi RPG be? I love fantasy themed RPGs but I think it would be awesome to play a sci-fi inspired RPG. And not sci-fi like Fallout... I mean true sci-fi.

I guess we'll be finding out....
Re: old school Sci-Fi RPG?
I'm intrigued BasiliskWrangler... how will we be finding out? Is there something in the works in parallel to Book 2?
Re: old school Sci-Fi RPG?
By true sci-fi I mean with spaceships, space, planets, and stuff. That would be fun.I mean true sci-fi.

I think BW meant we'd see by the kinds of responses received here.Jinx wrote:I'm intrigued BasiliskWrangler... how will we be finding out? Is there something in the works in parallel to Book 2?
I'm intrigued by a SciFi RPG. Historically it's been a difficult thing to get right. I have a cousin who's one of the designers on the Vendetta MMORPG, but it didn't make big waves.

No, I meant we'll all find out together.
We have another engine (it's true 3D, but mechanically it functions like an advanced Dungeon Master / Eye of the Beholder first-person engine) that we've been working with for quite some time. We have a storyline, some game mechanics in place, and even a title logo. It will be hard-line sci-fi (meaning no magic or voodoo like "the force", although it will feature fringe science). It will not be post-apocalyptic. We are drawing inspiration from an existing "old-school" sci-fi RPG from way back.
That is absolutely all I will say, other than we are considering taking a break between Book II and III to finish this game that I speak of. For now though, we are all about Book II!!

Ooh I would buy that. Hopefully it is party-based with ability to gain helpers/robots or some other such NPC help.
I worked for years in high school (early 90s) on an Ultima/M&M hybrid sci-fi CRPG called "Lazer Swordz" in QuickBasic, and was about 90% done with the engine+game maker. But the art of the project (enemy profiles) took too much effort to make. If I stuck to icons only it probably would have been finished. Ah the memories...

This sounds very, very interesting! I'm definitely looking forward to a sci-fi game from Basilisk Games. Two thumbs up for going with hard(ish) sci-fi! IMO, it's a lot better genre than the more common fantasy-with-lasers mumbo-jumbo sci-fi. Can't wait to hear more (but finish Book II first).
It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.
