Should I Start Again?

Post by Jenna »

I don't think I've ever messed up a run through so badly! My big mistake was not looking closely enough and realising that there was a skill set for repair. I've currently managed to send myself broke because I've had to pay for repairs so often. By this stage in the game I'm normally well-armoured and have plenty of back-up cash. I've just done the Akadai Underworld and gotten the crux, but I'm back above ground now with not enough cash to get my sword fixed (I'm like 100 gold short), and literally no other armour or weapons.

Is there any way to get myself out of this bind? It was only on my last level up that I actually noticed repair, and I now have one whole skill point in it, but I have a feeling it's too little too late. I'm wondering if I should just start again, which I don't really want to do!

I have the named sword - do you think 1 repair skill point will help when it's damaged? I've camped a couple of times and it doesn't seem to be getting better. I have bow and arrow, but I haven't put many skill points into it so I'm not very good. I always get too obsessed with being the best swordsman to the exclusion of everything else. Man, I suck at this haha.

Make sure you're equipping the sword - that's the only way it will repair overnight (if you have the repair skill). If you find one of the regions with no camp encounters (I think Moonrise works) you should be able to slowly get it up to full.
If you do play through another time, repair is a pretty important skill to get early for anyone using armor or melee weapons.

Book 3 requires higher repair skill to quickly fix named weapons and better armors, but the good news is they also take longer to wear out unless you use weapon feat too often.

Thanks you guys! I'm going to keep trying to get this character through it, but I think I'll start another one as well and not make so many mistakes with this one!

Also, you should be able to find a ring fairly early in the game that has repair (unless I'm mis-remembering), so wearing that while camping will help you without having to use skill points in repair at level-up.

In general, ranged combat is going to be easier on your character than melee, which makes sense when you look at the real world, as well. If you can take out an enemy before they can get close enough to hit you, you take no damage. :) One of the reasons why I've always loved playing rangers. Mages, of course, are even more powerful, but a I think the highest individual damage per shot actually comes from a highly skilled bowman.

I'm definitely going to up my bow skills. I really need to stop just going sword sword sword to the exclusion of everything else!
