So, very detailed here, but here goes:

Get an unknown alchemy ingredient, equip more weight in hand than somatic requirements allow, then ready the Lore spell. R-clilck on the alchemy ingredient and it pops-up the warning saying "Can't cast the spell" and then proceeds to let you mix the ingredient ...

The sextant didn't just up and walk away. Perhaps it had help. And yes, it is in that area.

I have found that as well, Dragonlady. It is quite easy to "fix" though. When entering an area for the first time, go through all chest, barrel, corpse, etc and "open" them then close them - thus locking in the contents.

Not sure if it will be done for Book I, but it is a safe way to allow random ...

I also destroyed a different barrel via fire dart and got no % damaged countdown w/ the 1.01 patch.
