It appears to me that you cannot accomplish anything here without some ability to deal with traps.

That may well be true, once you know where the particular coffin is, but there are a lot of critters down there more powerful than me, including a couple walking corpses that disease me if they land any damage at all, which kind of discourages careful exploration.

I am currently in the crypt of Adler Keldam and have opened a door that gave me the message that the security key has been removed from my inventory.

Now, I find that my character may not be up to winning the battles necessary to find the Keldam crypt.

If I leave the crypt and come back later ...

I'll probably aim for a jack-of-trades type character, unless I find out that it just doesn't work in this game. I'll be curious how the game deals with casters wearing armour, though.
