I will say this, though, Ultima II has a visceral satisfaction to the game play, much like Diablo. Especially once you get the ship and you get past the hard curve.

And if by some chance, you are trying your hand at your own game and don't have http://forums.indiegamer.com/ bookmarked, you really should check their forums out; they really try to keep a high signal to noise ratio, and a lot of experienced indies hang out there.

I'd add David Gerrold's "War Against the Chtorr" series to the recommended list with one caveat: He's only finished 4 of the 7 books planned, and has been stalling on the 5th book for a decade or so. Still a great read though.
