Re: Dragon Age: Origins

Mmm, maybe I should go back to DA:O when I've picked up more experience with other rpgs and try to stick with it longer. I probably gave up too soon.

Re: Dragon Age: Origins

The point I'm trying to make is that games like DA:O are marketed as if character development, story, dialogue, choices etc. are the game's 'meat', but really it's just about combat. As you rightly point out, that's what occupies you for 90 per cent of the time. But I had to buy the game, install it ...

Re: Dragon Age: Origins

Yeah, I guess I did have expectations about DA:O that didn't quite work out for me. But to be fair on DA:O, I didn't get very far with the story, so maybe it improved later on. I actually really liked the game at first and still do think it looks and sounds great.

The story and characters seemed ...

what do you want in an rpg?

I'm new to the rpg genre. I played about a dozen so far and found some things I liked, some things I didn't. But I've never finished an rpg. At some point I've always given up, either through boredom or frustration or whatever.

I began to wonder what elements I'd like to see in an rpg and thought ...

Re: Dragon Age: Origins

Hi All,

Well I'm not a veteran RPG gamer and only recently got into exploring this genre. I bought DA:O a few weeks ago and was initially impressed with the graphics. But after a few hours I had the game uninstalled. Here's why:

1. Blood. There's too much of it. It's just silly. Of course hand-to ...

Re: jaded gamer seeks info on good rpgs . . .

Hi There
And thanks for this feedback on Fallout1. I think you must be right about my approach to Fallout1 because I've only heard good things about it. I ought to look at it again and maybe read around the game a bit more. Thanks for the hint.

Re: new t EBII - early experiences

OK, many thanks indeed for these very helpful replies. I'm now getting further into the game thanks to this help - very much appreciated. The combat options (sword icon) and waiting option (spacebar) are proving useful.

I managed to complete my first quest! This was getting the sword back from the ...

Re: new t EBII - early experiences

OK, thanks for that. I like the game's atmosphere and presentation, and get the feeling there's a lot to enjoy and explore. Do the combat modes affect magical ranged attacks too? Or just regular melee combat?

I began a new adventure with a magic-using character. I didn't survive any longer than ...

Re: new t EBII - early experiences

OK, I see! now I understand things a bit better. Many thanks indeed for the help - much appreciated.

I've been playing the game a few hours since starting this thread and things have not been working out! I went down the well to look for the priest but one of the doors locks behind me and I can't ...

new t EBII - early experiences

Hi There,

I just bought this game. Here are my early experiences:

1. I go to the first town. I enter a building and see chests. I open a chest and take the stuff. A woman attacks me. Then a guard attacks me. My character is killed.

2. I go to the first town. I enter buildings and see barrels and ...

Re: jaded gamer seeks info on good rpgs . . .

Hi Dragonlady and thanks or this. Am downloading demos for Avernum 6 and Din's Curse as I type!

As for my rant above - I just want to say that all the games I tried impressed me at first, but the shine wore off and I was unable to complete any of them. I was hoping to learn more about what RPGs are ...

Re: jaded gamer seeks info on good rpgs . . .

Hi There and thanks for this. Actually I kind of liked all the games I mentioned at first but then got gradually bored or irritated for the various reasons I listed. They all had some good points and some good ideas.

But I was hoping to find a game I could get involved in enough to want to finish ...
