Adventure games are great.

I was pleased to stumble upon a couple of fairly recent adventure games, a game called "The Longest Journey" and its sequel "Dreamfall." I personally found the game world and storyline to be very immersive and enjoyable. If you haven't played these already and enjoy ...

Wow, I have no more need of entertainment for the next decade. Or at least until Eschalon comes out. Thanks!

How do I find classic cRPGs???

Reading some of the topics in these forums has left me with a desire to play some of the more classic games that I was never introduced to. Some of the older ones, like wasteland, etc. seem difficult to find (for a reasonable price, anyway). Even a game like Arcanum seems a bit overpriced, given its ...

Avernum 4 is more combat oriented than the previous Avernums. However, the plus is that the combat is far more balanced than in the other games. Magic, melee, and ranged attacks all see good use in combat in A4, and having a balanced team with a character specializing in each is almost a necessity ...

This looks very good! Definitely an accomplishment, especially if you don't have much programming experience. I am ashamed to admit I've never gotten that far with a game (yet), and I have a degree in CS.

I have never used Flash but I know that there are many games made in it. I will caution you ...

It is sad that the industry is like this now, but why make a truly spectacular game when you can still make obscene profits on a mediocre game with cutting edge graphics? And with far less risk...if you sink funds into developing story and characters (in addition to getting the aforementioned ...

My optimism for FO3 has been dropping with the recent previews. I've read things about some sort of nuclear-blast protective shield or compartment the character has, more details about nuclear-powered cars that explode and such-like. It's been reading more like a Fallout parody than a Fallout game ...

I happened upon a review of Fallout 3 at IGN today. It does give me some hope for the game. SPECIAL is defiantly in the game, as screenshots attest. I am also intrigued by this VATS system, as it preserves (partly) the AP use and targeting of body parts from the original Fallout, although I am ...

Favorite RPG setting

Just a poll to keep you busy while the game is in development :D

I am curious to see the type of settings people prefer. In my opinion, setting is very important for any crpg (or any rpg for that matter). Unique settings provide memorable game experiences and good immersion into the game world ...

The prevailing consensus seems to be for turn-based, which I suppose should not be surprising on a forum for a turn based game.

Heck the first thing I (we all!) learned back in 'Pools of Radiance' was surely 'take out the damn spell casters FIRST'

Indeed. This could get tricky in BOA and ...

A thought for handling such a combat dynamic such as giving certain squares bonuses occurred to me while reading this thread. I do agree that the squares behind and to the side of a player should grant some attack bonuses. However, how about making it so that the player has the ability to ...

So far it seems people prefer turn based systems for these types of games.

Gallifrey, you do make a good point about the problem with each enemy/player moving in individual turns, this is one of the main frustrations with turn based combat. I am interested in playing ToEE and seeing how that ...

Combat in crpgs

I just thought I'd get some thoughts/opinions on what features people like to see implemented in combat systems for crpgs.

What style of combat systems do you think provides the best gameplay?
Do you prefer a purely turn-based system like in Fallout or Avernum, or a real-time system ala Morrowind ...
