The first RPG I ever played was The Bards Tale. Now I have to admit that it bored me to tears, and I probably would never have ended up here ordering Eschalon if, a few days later, I hadn't stumbled upon Ultima 4. This game totally changed my mind and hooked me on RPG's.

I really loved Ultimas 4-6 and the Worlds of Ultima games. Number 5 was probably my favourite of the series.

I could never get enough Gold Box ADnD games. Never. This includes the Buck Rogers series.

The Magic Candle games were brilliant.

I heard much about Lands of Lore so when Westwood came out with LOL 2, I got it. Biggest mistake I ever did! That game sucks!

Played worse. It wasn't Lands of Lore 1, but really, it was an ok game. Especially next to some of the 'RPG's' that have been released in the past 5 years.

There were basically three variants of First person RPG's back then:

a) The walking blob party with turn based battles ala Bards Tale, Wizardry, Dragon Wars, etc

b)The walking blob party game with real time combat ala Dungeon Master, EOB, StoneKeep, etc.

c)The party travels in first person, but ...

Aren't you able to switch to something more lightweight to cast spell?
Aren't you able to completely remove the bulky stuff before spellcasting?
