Re: Remember when

No, the University of Arizona had a link to the network. One of the students that wrote teaching lessons used his accounts so he could have some friends to run with him while he built up his characters. Ah, the good old days when you had to understand how to program yourself. I had to write mostly i...

Re: Remember when

I played the father of all text games, Adventure in the Clossal Cave, on a Digital Equipment Corp. main frame in college. Then there was on the University of Illinois' PLATO system, Avatar that is now out as Mordor and/or Demise.

I still spent hours playing Eamon and Ultima III on an Apple II+.

Re: My critical analysis of the skills

Find hidden is the complement to perception. Having high perception in a spellcaster reduces its usefulness.

Alchemy is easy to abuse if you get the brewmaster rings and training since you can equipment swap as needed.

Re: Do you want loot/pick lock/disable trap to be changed ?

The system is kind of broken in that you can have one level in the two skills and then reload until it works. This maximizes experience if you have the patience. I know the hardcore system will eliminate that abuse. I would prefer having you need the minimum level to open a lock/trap to get experien...

Re: Speed up development of Book II via prepay option?

I did prepay with Avernum 4 from Spiderweb Software, so the game disk got sent to me as soon as it was released. Of course the game got updated a few times, but having it was nice. It also allows the company to gauge demand since these are people that care enough to want it and not have to wonder ho...

More money to hire more people to do the grunt work. If you have the money in advance, you can spend it.

Re: Book II Questions Thread

In one of the screen shots it mentions in the text below that you pick up a powder keg. Will you now be able to place objects on the floor instead of just containers? If you can place objects on the floor this would make it possible to place a powder keg and retreat to a safe distance so you can det...

Oooh, you can pick up and carry powder kegs. Does this mean we can place them on the ground to then explode them from a safe distance?

Re: Spell-hurling mages?

Otherwise it's a lot of attack and retreat to recharge. When you know roughly how much damage it takes to kill something then you can plan how to do it with the lowest mana cost.

I think the first game was Exile 1: Escape from the Pit. The Avernum series is a remake and updated engine for the Exile Series.

I remember spending hours mapping Might and Magic I and making notes on the messages that popped up as well as the monster locations. Might and Magic II had an automap, but I still needed those notes to make the maps useful. Now the original Bard's Tale was a pain for mapping because it played in re...

Spiderweb games are usually about mood and the large world to explore. If you want graphics or music you came to the wrong place since these go at the bottom of the list for things that get upgraded. Since almost all of the games are written by Jeff Vogel he concentrates on an interesting plot and p...

Get one level of lockpicking and skullduggery so you can gain experience from unlocking things and removing traps. More levels only decrease the experience, but save on the number of reloads. Get some divination so you can pick up healing spells and blessing for increased damage. Also catseye spell ...
