DId a quick search and since I didn't find anything, I'm assuming it's something people don't know about.

Basically, find a spot that allows you to channel foes. One square wide is best, but 2-3 wide is okay. Then, block off all but one square with powder kegs. At this point entice foes towards the spot, and when you get there block off the last hole with a powderkeg. You can sit behind the wall of kegs & pick off foes from safety for as long as it takes. If they're melee fighters only, then it's even easier due to them not being able to ranged fire at you. Against ranged fighters, you might have to back off & heal a bit. but it's still much easier since they can't follow you.

Several spots that were a pain before (the blacksmith, for one), became easy after I realized that NPC's don't seem to attack powder kegs.

I used something similar when I was trying a straight melee fighter to deal with the boreheads. Since they need a two-space wide path, I could stand with my back to a wall and place a powder keg on the two corner squares away from the wall and I'd be in a safe spot where I could rest up or just wait for my feat to refresh.

I remember lots of tricks like this in Ultima 6 and its spin-offs - pick up "solid" objects like a powder keg, crate, chest, etc. and use them to create favorable terrain for fights. It was a bit easier to do in those games because they weren't so heavy and you could reasonably carry lots of them around. You could also push an item one square in any direction without having to pick it up, which was handy.

I'd like to see the ability to pick up and/or move more things in Eschalon 3, like chests, barrels, bags, etc. but that's probably a lot more effort than it's worth compared to other cool stuff that's been requested.

The stone golem tend to avoid those powder kegs. It always stays 1 space away. Is it a bug or is it just its AI? Or is it because he occupies 3 by 3 spaces? I had a hard time trapping it with the kegs.

There's a hint/spoiler in the Fathamurk section on how to use powder kegs vs the Golem.

Anyone else ever play a game called Nahlakh by Tom Proudfoot? One of the essential skills was placing trees and rocks to channel the huge mobs that would assault your party. Can't imagine being able to progress in this game at all without creating a tree palisade as quickly as possible especially against bow users :)
