Mapping

Are there any ways to have an area not show on the HUD mini-map?

I don't think so. Certain things - containers, doors, etc. - will always appear. You may have some luck obscuring walls and floor types, although you'll need to play around with it. See for example the invisible maze in Tallushorn in Book II, although even it was visible with high enough Cartography.

I guess if you set the type to high enough Cartography, maybe above 20, it won't show up.

I think you're misunderstanding the purpose of the "cartography" value in the map tile data structure. It's not the level of cartography required for the tile to show up on the mini-map, it's the level of cartography that the tile was explored with.

Cartography doesn't matter. You can see the tiles with tactical grid on all the same. Only the "empty" black tiles don't show up on tactical grid.
