Post by Rune_74 »

You guys should really check out this game...its really cool it is ascii but you can get soem graphic packs for it(sorta) but I like the idea.

You basically get to make a dwarf fortress or travel the world...its interesting.

I just got around to trying this out. Man, the world generation is very impressive. I really didn't play far enough in to get more than a general idea of the game's mechanics, but what I did see was very nice.

It's not for ASCII haters, however! :)

It would be cool if a game like this could be transfered to tiles...try running your dwarf fort its very interesting...sorta like simcity meets rpg...its weird how good it actually is...I would love it if he would find a way to display even basic tiles.

I thought that too...ASCII characters are all uniform in size, and it would be very easy (thought time consuming) to pixel-draw a ton of replacement tiles that would overwrite the characters. It'd still look like poop, but at least it'd be recognizable; I can barely understand what's going on half the time in an ASCII RPG.

I've been playing Dwarf Fortress for quite a while now. I like the ASCII graphics.

However, there is a graphics version of Dwarf Fortress. You can find it at http://www.rpgcodex.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=21883

I guess this in Windows only? I can't find any system requirements listed on the site.

Yes, unfortunately.

The author is highly interested in an mac and linux port, but he doesn't know how to archive this without opening his code to others.

However, it does run fine in wine on my system. I guess wine is available on mac too.

Dwarf Fortress is a very nice game, would be a shame if you don't give it a try :-)

Looks interesting, but no harm in letting it cook for another year or two before diving in.

There is a beginner tutorial at
http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index. ... t_fortress

The learning curve is very steady, with the tutorial I was at least able to keep my dwarfs alive :)

Dont be frustrated, the motto "losing is fun" isnt there for nothing :)

It is explained in the tutorial in the category "farming". They teach you how to produce crops which then can be brewed into beer or wine or whatever.

Looks like they have a Mac version available now?

I'm just getting back into this... it is definitely more fun if you don't take failure too seriously.

Cool! According to the system specs, it should even work on my G4. I'll give it a try. :)
