Random item bonus question

I've seen random bonuses up to +4 on items, but I'm curious what happens if the default item already has a bonus to that stat.

For example, a Warlord's Plated Belt has a +1 armor by default. Which should mean you can't add more by imbuing, but I just found one with a random bonus on it. :)

A "Warlord's Plated Belt +3" says it has a +3 armor bonus (I checked, it really is +3 not a total of +4). But did the random bonus overwrite the default or add to it? Could a Warlord's Plated Belt +5 show up as a random version of this item?

Items have a base clase armor. Some items don't specify so base armor is 0. Then, they have the +1-3 typically (some cases +4). If any piece of equipment has a non armor bonus, you can still agument that armor to give it +1-3. Any Weapon can also be agumented for both to hit and damage if doesn't have any bonuses.

Yes, Warlord's Plated Belt is unusual in that the default item has both a base armor of 2 and an enhancement of +1 armor. (Also has +2 speed).

You might say, "That's silly, they should have just made it base 3." But this makes the item more of a challenge, because you can't just go imbue it to pump the armor up further. You have to find it with an added bonus - I like that.

Suggestion for the developers: consider including a bunch of really good items that can't be imbued, so that when you find one with random bonuses it's significant and valuable. Right now it seems unless you find a +4 so what - I can imbue it anyway.

I figured this one out - random bonus seems to overwrite the standard bonus, so Warlord's Plated Belt +4 (Armor +4) seems to be the max, not +5.
