Raptor Crushing

Post by Balkwyre »

Firstly, thanks to Basilisk for putting together this fantastic game. It's been a VERY long time since I played a game that didn't make any apologies, and didn't hold me by the hand all the way through. It's very nice to actually feel like I accomplished something when I make it through a part of this game.

I'm certain that I've gimped my character a bit, will probably do better on my next one, but pushing through with this one to see the game and enjoy the challenge.

One particular zone has really stuck out as fantastic. The Raptor Pens (East of Vela). This area just about broke me, I came here at level 10 and just couldn't handle the raptors. It would take all of my health to drop one of them (Not sure if this is good or bad for that level lol). Anyhow, I was close to quitting or re-rolling at this point....

Then I accidentally crushed a raptor in a portcullis.

!!!!

I spent the next half hour laughing like an evil scientist (My wife thought I was nuts) as I kited every raptor in that zone to the nearest Raptor Crusher. I had them lined up like some sort of grotesque Raptor disassembly line.

Best $20 I've spent on a game in a long while.

I accidentally learned the portcullis trick in the first dungeon, and giggled maniacally. It came in handy again with the raptors. You get less XP, but it's very, very satisfying.

Best part is crushing salamanders, you actually get more xp in that case, but it's rare that you get the opportunity.

The easiest ways I found to deal with hard monsters is to fight them at night. This works as long as you can use cat's eyes or preferably predator's sight. They get the heavily concealed in darkness debuff while you get to hit away like normal. I used this on the raptors and the tauraxe to make them much easier around level 10.

I first discovered this with the bloodsippers in Eversleep in the passage with the barrel of blood. I was too weak to fight them and in running I dropped the portcullis to try to keep one away from me.

Of course, you lose XP using it on anything other than salamanders and bloodsippers (you actually gain XP using it on the salamanders).

I first used this back when I just had the demo version in the wine cellar dungeon when (due to poor stat and skill selection) I couldn't stand up to the Noximanders without a severe chance of death and facing two at once was certain death, so I was going to lure one away onto the other side of the portcullis, but then, as I stood next to the lever and one was directly under the gate, I decided why not see if crushing it would work?

And it did. It so very much did. I was quite happy then. Later I had a lot of fun lining up enemies to the improvised guillotine I had set up (only when it was convenient and I got an equal to greater xp exchange of course). Good times.
