Hi All,
Yet another request for help trying to remember an old RPG game.
Here’s what I can remember:
I’m pretty sure I played it in the early 90s but it might have come out a few years before then. So sometime between 87 and 98 maybe?
It was a 2d flat graphics game. From what I remember the graphics were along the line of ‘Dark Sun 1 The Shattered Lands’ and the screen shots at: http://www.heroicfantasygames.com/RPGShrine.htm. But it was a single character game, not a party
I’m pretty sure the title was one word and referred to the king/main quest giver or the name of the fantasy world. I want to say that it was something like ‘xanth’ though that obviously wasn’t it as that’s Peirs Antony’s fantasy book series.
I remember that my character used a boomerang, which is a pretty unusual weapon, but there were also classic weapons like swords, bows, etc. Anyway, I used a boomerang because it could hit enemies going out and coming back. Also, I think that the main dungeon had a lot of places where you could use a ranged attack over a fence or across a moat and kill most of the monsters without getting into melee range. Along these lines, I think that the game had a lot of wrought iron fences that you could attack monsters over. Fences that you could bend open and closed but the monsters couldn’t
I don’t think that there were magical spells-e.g. fireballs, instead I think there was some sort of text box that you could type different words into and if you guessed a well a spell-like thing would happen. I think the only one that I ever used, was ‘heal’ where it would take half your food bar and then heal you some.
I don’t think that you levelled up per se. I think your character advanced by getting gold that you could buy potions and scrolls with that would increase your max health, strength, etc. Though you might have levelled up, but it was just something really generic like a little bit more on all your stats. I'm pretty sure that there weren't really classes either, I think everyone had the same character and it just depended on whether you wanted to use a sword or a bow or boomerang or whatever.
Also your stats weren’t numbers (or only numbers). The main representation for food, health, strength, etc (I think there were 6 or 8 or so) was horizontal bars of different colors-food was dark green, health was red, strenght might have been yellow, etc. All but food went up over time, food went down-e.g. you got more hungry. So I’m pretty sure that you had to carry food, the main source of which was ‘rations’ and ‘iron rations.’ Also you started with a bunch of empty space and when you got a potion or scroll that raised your stats, your bars for your max of everything would grow. But it was possible to max them out.
As far as the plot line (spoiler alert) I think that you talked to a king and he gave you all of the quests. It was very linear. I think you spent most or all of the game going through one dungeon trying to get to a final boss. Then at the very end, I think you have to make a choice and you sort of get some hints that actually the king is the main bad guy. So you either killed the guy the king told you to or attacked the king and I’m pretty sure that the real way to win was by killing the king, who turns out to be the tyrant.
Anyway, if anyone has any ideas please tell me, its driving me nuts. Also, if you can think of any questions that might help figure it out, let me know!
Thanks,
Mac

-Is it this one?
*EDIT*
-I am pretty sure it is. Hah. I just re-read your post and 'rations and iron rations' sounds so familiar...

AHH! Yes that's it! Thanks, now I'm going to go cry because I no longer have a Mac either and I am/was desperate to replay this game. Oh well...
Does anyone know of a PC -> Mac program? I.e. the reverse of Bootcamp?

Shows a Mac emulator, though I won't personally swear that it works, or even what versions of the Mac OS it supports. This was with a quick google search. There's even a program that lets you read Mac-formated disks in Windows, making it a tad bit easier to transfer things over.
