Mount & Blade

Post by Saxon1974 »

Anyone played Mount & Blade?

I am a Medieval buff and I had seen the game but I kept passing on it due to reviews saying the combat is great but the game lacks depth and background story.

Well I decided to pick it up and Im glad I did. Im surprised at how much I like it. It's a freeform sandbox medieval world with the best combat I have seen in a 3D first person style game. The gameplay itself is sort of like the gameplay in Pirates however you do have stats and skills for your character and followers and there are quests given. The game world is a bit like the War of the Roses with 5 different Kings fighting for the land, you can join one or many of them and fight for them and try and make them king of all the land.

It doesn't have a deep background story and the locations all have mostly the same things in them which is probably its biggest weakness but Im having a ball playing it.

There are also some nice looking mods Im going to try as well.

-Actually, I played some of it. But I have never played a game like that and I was sorta confused. I did have fun though winning battles 1v7+ riding my horse and using my sword side attack thing using speed to one hit kill them. =)

Well its a free form game where it leaves it up to you to do what you want to. There is no main narrative that tells you what to do like in many RPG games. I have to say I like that. I would like to see a little more back story and narrative but the game is still big fun as it is.

If you were winning battles 1 vs 7 you probably didnt have the difficulty up very high. I play at around 50% difficulty and I can sometimes win against a larger force but I have to use good strategy to do so. Also, your troops will improve as you play as well where you can beat larger forces.

Upping to a decent level of difficulty will no longer make you play like Conan where you can wipe out 10 guys by yourself, I dont want it impossible but not that easy either.

I have joined the Nords and I am working towards giving the Nord king the crown of all of Calradia (The landmass the game plays out on).

I did pick up this game, found that it required online activation (although this wasn't mentioned anywhere on the box) and returned it. Whatever its merits, I consider it unacceptable to have an "anti-piracy" system that means the game dies when the publisher closes up shop.

I dont really like the online activation thing either, but I would have missed one of my favorite games in a few years If I didnt play it because of that.

For 15$ its well worth it. I have been playing it for about a month now, love it.

If your a medieval buff this has got to be your game.

Im playing a MOD called AD 1257. The goal of the mod is to simulate the world as close to realistic for the year 1257 as possible. Quite good.

I think this is a game made by 2 people out of a labor of love and it shows for me. Im having much more fun with it than most big budget games.

It's kind of debatable whether its an RPG or now though. Its got lots of RPG elements with stats, skills and quests but the world isn't story driven like most RPG's. Think Pirates with medieval flare but with more RPG stats thrown in (I think I already mentioned that).

It may seem ridiculous, but it's the truth.
Despite what I'm saying, it's a nice game (or so it seems).
You know the tutorial for Bows is pretty difficult. It's hard to hit targets more then 20 feet away...but you know what that's probably pretty realistic. I usually just do the fighting tutorial for the XP when I start a new game and skip the Bows part.

The game does get a little bit repetitive after a while but even so I keep trying to play something else and then going back to Mount & Blade. Very few games hold my interest for a full month like this one has.

If you want a more story driven game play Prophesy of Pendor Mod. I haven't played it yet myself but everyone says its the best story based mod. The other two I really like are "Native Expansion" and "AD 1257".

If your going to play the base game make sure you use "Native Expansion" mod as its the base game but with lots of improvements.

Is it effective to use your sword in fighting or killing the enemy?

Mount & Blade may be based on the medieval life ever made. Mount & Blade has some innovative ideas, but still needs a lot of work.Using a lance is as easy as building up enough speed and aiming the pointy end in the right direction. Mount & Blade is fun to play. It’s not good to look at.
