Which Spiderweb Software game do you prefer, and why?
I'm assuming Spiderweb is pretty popular among the people that lurk the drunken lizard pub. Could be wrong, but anyway, what's your favorite game from them? I've only played Avernum IV, V, Geneforge 3, 4, 5 and Nethergate Ressurection. I used to enjoy Geneforge 4 the most but nowadays I'm warming up to Avernum IV (which was the first Spiderweb game I played but didn't get too far initially before trying out the Geneforge series, and I always prefered V to it, since it was released anyway). After playing Avernum IV consantly for the last week, I have to say I'm enjoying a lot more than the other games I've played, (except Geneforge 4). Compared to the newest Avernum, it feels a lot less sterile, a lot more fun and engaging, even if I do feel the urge to just save, quit and get on with my life (something I never felt with Geneforge 4). But yeah, I guess Geneforge 4 is my favorite, even though it's been months since I last played it. Geneforge 5 is pretty... meh.

I've tried the Geneforge series, got through the first one but didn't really like it. I've played Nethergate and Nethergate Ress. In fact playing the latter off and on this week, again. I liked the celtic part more than the Roman one. I like the Avernum series the best. Gone thru 1-4 and am trying to get through 5 now...when not watching from around the corner my son beta testing 6.
I can't do long hours of constant key clicking anymore cause the nevers in my wrist (Carpal Tunnel) get irritated too much. I guess I'm switching between Nethergate, Avernum 5 and Escalon Book: 1 for the last 2 weeks.
I also toss in playing "Gems" for the Mac when I get a dragonish appetite for hoarding jewels.
My top score there is over 180,000. (not high vs. world count chart but its fine enough for me)

I like the Nethergate games which are always over much too soon.
I started on the Exile games and always like Exile 2. The Avernum series are remakes with different game engines. So I like Avernum 2 with its plot and Avernum 5 which so far is the best of the released new game engine. Avernum 6 is even better.
I never could get into the Geneforge games, but the last one is interesting.

I like the Geneforge series because of the unique setting.

I believe that the Avernum series has traditionally sold better than the Geneforge series.
But personally I've always been partial to the Geneforge series, the ideas are more interesting and more original.
Plus, we get to see the player actually walk, ahem.
I've always had a special place in my heart, so to speak, for Geneforge 3 - maybe because that was the first Spiderweb game I played - and I think that's probably still my favorite in the series. I like the plot. It wasn't complicated, but it was solid.
...But try saying that on the Spidweb forums? You'll get your head knocked off. There're too many people over there clinging to the old days of Exile and Avernum 1-3.
I still can't wait until Avernum 6.

Certainty: a character-driven, literary, turn-based mini-CRPG in which Vasek, legendary "Wandering Philosopher", seeks certainties in a cryptically insular, organic, critically layered city.

Shit, I just saw some screens of Avenum 6 and it's good to see them finally improving the graphics

Agreed. With every Geneforge game it's kinda like a new experience, but with Avernum you kinda know what to expect, it being a pure old school style game and all.But personally I've always been partial to the Geneforge series, the ideas are more interesting and more original.

Avernum 5 hands down. I've played them all, and probably hundreds of other console and CRPGs. A5 was the first one in many moons that I just couldn't stop playing. I played for several nights into the week hours living off dozens of pots off coffee. I subsequently crashed and slept for damn near 13 hours. I hadn't been that enthralled by an RPG since Final Fantasy VII.
