Trying to make a "monk" -- Feedback welcome

Post by RisingShadow »

Okay so just for the heck of it I decided for my first character I've decided to make a traveling monk. Please mind I"m looking at it from as much a role play / be true to character concept as I am about functionality in the game. I like a bit of a challenge and I see no reason to min/max

Now I've finished up the first dungeon level with the mithral bar. This combo did pretty darn good there. The real question is how should I focus his growth?

I'm thinking with skills I should go with unarmed combat, spot hidden, dodge, and my Arcane Divination. I proably won't have him wear armor (not sure how wise that is, but it's rare to imagine a traveling monk in any kind of armor, even leather)

I'm completely baffled on what to do with his stats...maybe a few more in endurance then focus on str/speed? He's still going to be a caster, but I suppose he's more of a fighter oriented healer than anything....

Lv 1:
Start with a cleric base
1 Arcane, Divination
1 Dodge
2 unarmed combat skill
1 Lore
2 Spot Hidden
1 Survival
1 Cartography

14 Strength
12 Dex
11 Endurance
14 Speed
12 Int
18 Wis
16 perception
14 concentration

A couple of opinions:

1) If you're going no armor, you'll need to pump dodge and dex something awful.

2) Spot Hidden seems to be of limited value (correct me if I'm wrong, BW, please). From some discussion over at the Watch, seems to not really be of enough benefit to justify the precious skill point expenditure.

3) I've found Div pretty powerful, so getting up to skill level 7 quickly so you can cast the spells at level 4 is good. Entangle, Heal, Leatherskin, Lore and Bless are all very, very useful in the first half of the game.

Iv found spot pritty handy so far, im only on my first play through but it certainly helps to notice traps. I guess if you have played the game a number of times it wouldnt be that great. Also with spot you notice hidden things in walls, which are usually gems - handy for your coin pouch i can tell you.

There are more hidden things to spot than people think, it appears to be somewhat random though, since at some places I've spotted something hidden... and died after,,, went back to the same place and nothing hidden there anymore.... I've also found very valuable items, such as cloaks and amulets, that are worth 1000's of gold, and even couldn't be found in stores.

Unfortunately THAT EVIL EVIL acid grub destroyed my cloak!!! GRRRRRRRRR.

I did a monk on my first run through. Unarmed combat, bow, alchemy and (later) divine magic. I was atheistic & could not use bless or heal but nimbleness & the skin spells were terrific. Lots of speed, dex, and strength. Spot hidden & survival both got flushed to around 5 but I'm not sure how useful they really were.

Which divine class were you? I found the druidic one to be pretty useful for travel so far...

One thing I really like about unarmed combat is I"m not breaking weapons when smashing stuff.

I wasn't really a divine class. I started as a ranger. Picked up divine later through training book & priest's cloak. I did cheat and use light armor.

I won't even try to kill an, (evil evil) acid grub without a ranged weapon.
I also found many extraordinary items with the spot skill.
Help is good when asked for,
better when needed.
