I think part of the confusion with where to classify a weapon lies in the categories themselves. You have Swords and Bows, and Thrown Weapons, which are classifications of weapon types, and you have Cleaving, Bludgeoning, and now Piercing Weapons, which are classifications of damage types. That being said, I still think the categories themselves are pretty decent selection-wise.
If there's such a large problem with the pick's weapon classification, I'd recommend just removing it. Replace it with something like the Kama, which is a similar weapon, but less likely to be confused with a bludgeoning type weapon. Or add in the kama as a piercing weapon, and shove the pick into the bludgeoning class. A little something for everyone...
I also would be a little pickier (no pun intended) about the extra attacks per round... perhaps it should be weight-based as well? I would pause before giving a spear weilder the same number of attacks as a dagger user.
