I've not been able to find the alchemy guy in bordertown. The town is tiny so I've no idea where this fellow is hiding or if he exists in my game. I *think* the archer and ranger were killed by bandits because I saw them the first time i went into the town but now they are gone. So - I only have the blacksmith; inn keeper and fellow who had me clear the swamp in my bordertown - either that or I'm very dense and the alchemy fellow is hiding under my nose.
I've no luck finding ectoplasm which seems to be a major ingrediant for imbue of armor.
On the positive side I did manage to clear grimlock by blowing up the warlord (he had a nice blue key that doesn't seem to fit any locks).

On chests and stuff..(save the game at a chest, open it,re-load if you get a crap roll)
The vast bulk of loot the game generates is...sadly ...garbage.
Also you want to get alchemy to 9 as soon as you can. There is a trainer in bordertown and skill book for it so thats 7 points for 1500-1600 gold.
That allows you to imbue your weapons and armor to +3.The game becomes so much easier once you imbue everything.
Also...Gravedigger's flame (arcane light spell)works soooo much better than cateye.I suppose you could carry a lantern though..
But once I found out about GDF I never went back .
Hang onto Ectoplasm, spidersilk, venom and mercury. They are used in imbueing equipment.Oh...one ash would be handy to tuck away somewhere safe too.

I believe he is NE and just a bit off screen of the Archery/Throwing weapons trainer you were talking about. So it's entirely possible that he was killed. He stands near to a wall enclosing a campfire and treasure chest on one side. By that wall is a sign that reads "Gamfari's Hermetics"

Best source of ectoplasm I've found is from ghosts. Though it is sold in a particular town I'm assuming you haven't reached yet.

Just. Don't. Throw. It. Away! Nothing wrong with storing it if it's in the way in your inventory but just don't forget where you put it!

Sometimes the alchemy guy gets 'lure'd into the swamp area to the east of the little town and he will stay there and you have to find him. If there is no one there then he got killed. There was an archer who would teach you several skills, and the alchemist, who usually stands near that fire/chest mentioned by other poster.
Ectoplasm can be bought in a larger town, a long, dangerous walk from Bordertown.
Hint:
The key you got from the warlord is one of 4 you'll need much later in the game. If you don't want to carry it around pop it into one of the barrels in the ruined town you first appeared in, along with anything else you are unsure of. You can come back later to retreive it when needed.
Some of the story lines take a while to complete as you have to go from A to D to B, back to A and on to C, etc.

Patience and searching the faq & forum will be a great help.

I think it's interesting how people use different skills sets in playing the game. For instance, my latest character relies mainly on his sword and and uses Fire Dart for ranged attacks. I have pumped up Hide in Shadows, which has saved him a lot of pain. Anyway, I pretty much rely on Cat's Eye and Predator Sight. If I use Gravedigger's Flame the use of Hide in Shadow is severely compromised because I can't extinguish the flames at will.

Unclever title wrote:Lately I've been playing a mage with Strength, Endurance, Intelligence, and Perception all under 10 for the express purpose of not gaining HP and gaining the minimum possible MP gain for a mage (2 MP per Level).
As you could guess it usually takes a fair bit of re-rolling to get those four stats below 10.
I don't have access to my stats at the moment but I'll check back once I get home. However I will say that I've not been limiting my other skills, in fact I've given special focus to Dexterity and with bow weapons he's more like a ranger (Ranger minimum gain per level is 2 HP and 1 MP).
Hey, Unclever! I just wanted to let you know that I've investigated this issue (I may start a separate thread on the issue, with all the details), and in fact, it's not true, believe it or not!
The reason you though that minimums for Ranger is +2 HP and +1 MP per Level-Up is because MP gain on Level-Up is based on Perception
and Wisdom for Rangers (and Healers), and not Perception and
Intelligence as it is for Fighter, Rogues and Mages.
So, in fact, if your Ranger had started out with PER < 10 and WIS < 10 (instead of INT < 10), your MP gain on Level-Up would have been a big fat
zero!
Unclever title wrote:Anyway before this I've played a healer with just strength and endurance under 10, so no HP gain. I managed to get destroyer with a max HP of 23. But that's not generally low stats just differently focused stats.
For the purpose of informing, I've found out that a Rogue will gain at minimum 2 HP and 0 MP per level.
I don't know what the Fighter gains at minimum per level (probably 2 HP and 0 MP, maybe 3 HP)...
It's +2 HP and 0 MP for Fighters. The rest are correct.
Like I said, if anyone's interested, I'll post a separate thread on the results of my research on this issue...

Thank you VERY much IJBall! That's kind of making me wonder if any of the other physical stats play a role in HP gain per level (at least in the minimum), I much doubt this... but it does raise the question...
I'll have to look into a minimum gain Healer just to sate my curiosity on if I can get the "Stunted Growth" kind of character.
