Well, there's more to it, depending on the spell.

Obviously, casting a Tier One spell at a higher level will cost more Mana Points.

But you'll often get something in return - e.g. casting Cat's Eyes at Level 2 will double the length of the spell; casting Bless at Level 2 vs. Level 1 will improve the modifiers from +2 ToHit/+2 Damage from +1 ToHit/+1 Damage; casting Fire Dart at Level 2 will increase the damage delivered, etc.

In general, there are a number of spells which can always be cast just at Level 1, IMHO - Cat's Eyes or Gravedigger's Flame, for example.

But a number of spells - Bless & Fire Dart among them - definitely have improved benefits at higher casting levels, even with the high cost in MP.

But everyone's mileage may vary... 8)

Well, I am not entirely sure. I met a dying guard and he told me not to try to open the area under Grimhold (I think that is it) alone but I took the quest anyway. I am not doing well at it, as I am too low a level I think for this quest. I am wondering if I can go back to it later, and how many quests are you able to have at any one time?

I meet the man in the other city and took a couple quests there; from priest, other to find a book, etc., but still trying to figure out Grimhold. I have spent most of my time resting to heal! :)

Other wise I like the character and I am over half way to level 2.

Oh, I do have a question. When setting a spell you have to choose a level for it; I chose level 1, because I did not know the ramifications of choosing higher levels for low level spells.

Thanks
Grimhold might be a little too hard for you this early in the game. Talk to the inn keeper in Aridell, ask him about the drunk guy sitting at the table. Then talk to the guy sitting at the table, he will give you the sextant quest. When you return the sextant you can buy training in cartogrophy from him and improve the detail of your mini map.

Good luck on your adventure!

I agree with AK-Marty, you probably ought to wait a little bit to take on Grimhold East. The first thing you need to do is to gain a couple of levels so that you can cast Fire Dart at level 3 (which requires Elemental of 5). Also, if you don't have Air Shield, Grimhold is going to be pretty miserable.

The quest for the sextant and the delivery of the Potion of Absolute Restoration are good places to start - have you talked to the priest yet?

However, there are a couple of even better places to start if you are still at level 1. First, go to Leurik's house and accept his quest. His house is found by following the path that leads northwest out of Aridell.

Next, go down the steps in the abandoned area of Elderhollow. You can recover the bar of Mithril for the guy who makes weapons in Aridell.

Next do the sextant and the potion quests. Happy hunting!

Wow, thanks for all the help. This is a great community and I appreciate you taking on the new guy who has only casually played RPGs in the past, but am truly enjoying this game very much.

I will follow your advice as I do not have some of these quests yet.

Thanks, I will update you as soon as I accomplish a bit more. :)

Faithful remember to talk to every single person you see, that is how you learn the story line and get your quests. Wander the woods around Aridell and kill salamanders to gain a couple levels. There are qute a few chests and barrels to loot. When you find sealed barrels, hold the shift key and click on them to smash them open. If you have one point in unarmed combat, you can do this bare handed without losing any HP or damaging your weapons!

Thank you. I did not know how to open these up, I tried casting on them but it takes forever! :) This will make things a lot easier, thanks.

You're welcome, always happy to help out. I trashed a few swords before I found out about the unarmed combat trick. Also if you find weapon fragments, they just take up space in your inventory. They have no use or value.

What about skulls and bones? I have been passing them by thinking they would be of no real use or worth.

Skulls and bones can be sold for a little extra gold, if you're hard up, but if not, they aren't worth the space in your inventory or the merchant's.

OK, I have a question. I talked to the person who owns the key to the crypt, but I had already gone downstairs and killed the lizards ahead of time. So, when I talked to him I offered to kill the lizards and as soon I took the quest I talked again and the quest was complete.

However, going into the crypt area I realized I really did not have the key yet, so I made my way back to the keepers house but there was no more dialog to get the key.

So, I casted firedart 2 until I destroyed his chest and took his key and some other item. He attacked me so I ended up killing him.

Is there a problem in doing this for the story line? Does killing people have any real affect on the course of the game, and should I just press ahead even though he is now dead?

Thanks

As long as you have the crypt key, killing Leuric just gives you a little more experience. Time to head for Eversleep Cemetary!! Do you have the grave diggers flame and predator sight spells yet? They make dungeon crawls so much more fulfilling.

Thank you. It is good to know I did not mess up too badly.

I have the key and that is all. I am doing it mainly in the dark, and I believe I have found everything needed. Are the diggers flame and sight spell something you quest for, buy, or randomly find?

Thanks again.

Let's see where you are in the game. Have you recovered the bar of Mithril for the blacksmith in Aridell yet? If not, you will get a lot of great experience points when you do that quest. It's the one down the steps in Elderhollow.

Also, the nice thing about Eschalon is that everyone plays each game a little bit differently. Personally, I'm not real fond of Gravedigger's Flame because it burns until the spell wears off. So, if I'm being attacked by an enemy and I want to be less visible I'm stuck with the flame when I don't want to be. Did you know that you can gather torches from all over? The ones in Aridell are re-lit every evening, so you have an unlimited supply of light that you can turn on or off at will.

Also, one of the most valuable spells is Predator Sight, but I have never been able to find it until I got to Bordertown. So, you will probably not be able to use it in Eversleep.
