Use an axe. Best for splitting things. Or a hammer.
No, a real man will do that with fist or foot
If you have at least one point in "unarmed combat" you won't get hurt when bashing things without weapons.

But using demon oil was fun ! And it only took a few turns for it to burn, whereas using an axe or such takes awhile.

But it's
a lot more expensive.

With my Fighter character I only used swords. Should it break, I would reload QuickSave again.

There are all of these interesting books in Eschalon that don't serve any purpose but improve the atmosphere or give you some background of the setting. I was loathe to sell them, but they were weighing me down. I wanted to hold on to them in case I decided to read them again later. So I stuck them in the cabinet in my room at the Aribel inn.
Toward the very end of the game, right before I stormed the Goblin Citadel, I returned them and retrieved the books to read them one more time. The innkeeper saw me and started attacking me. I didn't realize that would happen. He only had a 2% chance to hit me, so I was fine, but I didn't want to kill him, so I just fled. Luckily, I was never planning on returning to that town.
Would he have 'lost aggro' after awhile, or immediately started pummeling at me again if I would have returned, I wonder?

I think hatred towards a "thief" lasts forever...

Neverwinter Nights has books like this, as well. Except, some were so obscenely long that I would not even try to read them ramble on about some pointless subject. Books like that are ok, but I'm not gonna read for 10minutes about something unrelated. Luckily the ones in Book I were short enough for my attention span !

If you have the spell "Charm" you can turn somebody who is mad at you into your friend. Unfortunately, that changes when the spell wears off......

Actually I've never known it to wear off with NPCs other than those who are naturally enemies.
So the charmed innkeeper will forgive for good.

I think this is generally good advice, especially if the owner of said chest is female and you yourself are not female.

Yes, I found this a little annoying in NWN, since I ended up devoting not a small part of my inventory to all these books that I ended up not reading (and they took up
so much space... the magic bags and bags of holding were next to useless for so many items that size). I think I kept them because I figured they might have valuable info inside, but... never found them to be useful.
In my opinion: best to keep such books few in number, as Eschalon did, and/or on a subject that teaches you something, as Eschalon also did.
