The cartography skill really helps finding your way through dense forest...
The bucket is a nice touch. I love the attention to detail in this game.
In addition to raising your Mercantile skill, you should repair items yourself before selling them. Early in the game, you can find gloves that give a bonus to repair. You really only need one point in repair.
It is slightly more efficient to read the Mercantile book before putting points into the skill.
