Questron. Anybody remember that game? It had mini-arcade games to raise stats. It also had one of the coolest endings in games

Had to think hard on this but I now remember it being-Legacy of the Ancients for the C64, yep that's the one that started the addiction years ago.

Temple of Apshai on the Apple ][+, IIRC. It's been a while. :D

I still have the machine, and it still works! :D

Yes, I am somewhat of a pack rat when it comes to tech.

If you mean RPGs on a computer then I'm pretty sure the first I ever played was Nethack.

My first CRPG probably was Eye of the Beholder. Still got the box and even installed it. DOSBox ftw ... :)

I got my first computer in '86 (Tandy 1500SX with 2, count 'em 2, 5 1/4" disk drives) and immediately bought two RPG's. They were Starflight and Might and Magic (the original). I was hooked from that moment on. Will be 55 this year and still love playing rpg's and strategy games when I can. Just bought Echelon II and hope to enjoy it as much as the first one.

Technically, I suppose Temple of Apshai was my first, if it counts. The first serious RPG I played was Wasteland, though.

Probably either Final Fantasy I or Legend of Zelda, although Earthbound was the first one I really got hooked on and played completely through.

My first was probably Moria or Rogue, during the 80's and for some obscure reason I get more glued by Moria. But before that I played few week-end Wizardry 1 at the beginning of the 80's. It was the Apple II of a friend alas I get banned by his parents!

I don't consider Roguelike totally like CRPG and for Wizardry 1 it was more a try. So the first real CRPG I played was probably Pool of Radiance on Mac and in 1989 or Citadel Adventure of the Crystal Keep, also on Mac and during 1989, I don't remember well my best bet is that it was Pool of Radiance.

CrazyBernie wrote: If you asked me about the first RPG that had what I would consider a profound effect on me, it would be Final Fantasy III for the Super NES (a.k.a. FF VI). To this day I hail it as the "best rpg ever." The number of characters and the amount of story that went into the game was incredible, and the graphics for the time were quite amazing...
I have never been able to pinpoint which was that FF I played on the SNES, because of all the troubles with those numbers. But now you quote it I remember now that was FF3 but in fact it was FF6. Everything was great but it was my first JRPG ever (never own any console and own a SNES only very late), and the music during fights, plus the fight system, plus all this extreme harassing of random fights, finally succeed make me upset again the game and I gave the console without to ever come back to the game.

Now I'm even older and succeed play more JRPG I'll be able enjoy it quite more, so it's cool a DS remake of FF6 is coming and that will be a great opportunity to come back to this game.

Starflight was really terrific. Starflight II was even better. I have to search around and see if I could find Protostar (probably abandonware) which was an unofficial sequel to Starflight II. If I could find it and get it to run in Dosbox I'd be a seriously happy camper.

The first RPG I ever played was Geneforge. That game has got to be one of the best RPG games ever made. (Barring Eschalon of course) :)

I know I'm quoting an old post, but I was just reading through this thread and got a real jolt when I read this post. Those were the ones we played way back when. I picked up the D&D blue box (IIRC) in 1977. We moved from that to Gamma World and Traveller (and still played D&D alongside).

First CRPG I can recall was Bard's Tale.

If we're talking pencil and paper type RPGs then I'll have to go with AD&D 2nd Edition. The pencil & paper RPG I played more often than any other though was Space Master (the old school system not the Privateers system). Much more complex than D&D and characters could literally take hours to create, but I loved all the tables and the critical system, plus I've always liked Sci-Fi settings.
