It seems to me that adding "Perception" is the way to go since it gives more mana.
Complex spells require Int of 15 or 20 respectively (perhaps the beginner spells need an Int of 10, I don't know?). This can be with items as well, so if you have a hat of Int +2 and a Ring of Int +4, you only need a base Int of 14 to learn any spell in the game. You can then cast at any time, i.e. even if you're not currently at Int 20.

Similar rules for Wis for divination spells.

Yes, I think Perception is the way to go as a caster in this game. Also, per an earlier post in this thread, you should raise Per as much as possible on initial generation, as each point will give you 2 points of starting mana.

Ouch! Yep Morgendil, you need to put points into perception. You only need 20 intelligence for the whole game. All the rest of your points should be dumped into perception. Perception raises Mana much more so than Intelligence.

I hope BasiliskWrangler makes the stats more meaningful in the next game. Ideally, your intelligence score would affect the damage of elemental spells and your wisdom score would affect the damage/healing of your divination spells. I'm not sure why he didn't put that into the game. More strength and speed = more melee damage, so you'd figure more wisdom and intelligence = more spell damage, greater effects.

This is just a quibble though. The game engine is awesome!

As a note, Intelligence is not useless; it does effect Elemental Resistance directly. That being said the point is still valid, as Perception gives double the MP / level while also being directly related to Magic Resistance.

Unless you're really having trouble with Elemental Damage, Perception is the way to go.

You don't even need an Int of 20 playing as a mage to be honest - with a couple of rings of intelligence +4 and the helmet of intelligence +2, you could have an Int low as 10 and still cast every elemental spell in the game.

Note that you only need the int requirement to learn the spell; once its in your book the engine only checks your elemental skill level to determine the highest level you can cast at.

Also, on the subject of elemental damage, I don't recall being hit with that much damage of this type during the game. The key resistances seem to be disease, poison, and magic (in that order) based on level of harm done and frequency of occurrence.

In my view, the Int requirement and Wis requirement for spells should be checked whenever a spell is cast. In addition, I would not allow + attribute items to stack, i.e. you should only get the benefit of the highest - this would go someway to preventing abuses like 2 x brewmaster rings, 2 x assassin rings, 2 x wisdom rings, 2 x intelligence rings...
