It's also more the case that we're abandoning classes as well, allowing players to create whatever type and shape of character they want to. I like it, because I can't stand class/alignment. In Eschalon alignment doesn't make too much difference, you're not forced to play the way you pick at the start.
Exactly. Here, it comes down to, instead of "moral judgment made upon you by the game itself", a much more realistic situation of how NPC's in the game view you, based largely on the sorts of stories they've heard about you.
(And like you, I've never much liked "alignment" categories much, either, not just because they're so often incorrect and misleading but also, if the character is well-written, subject to change -- especially, of course your own character)

You certainly don't
have to start a new character. You can doubtless finish the game with the one you have now. Although if you like having the perfect uber-build, you might start thinking about that for your next playthrough. It's hard to optimize well before you know the game.
Hi. Let me see if I can explain how the skills Hide in Shadows and Move Silently are supposed to work. Hide in Shadows means that your character can hide any place where there are Shadows present, such as in darkened alley-ways, etc. Move Silently is used to determine whether or not people and other creatures can hear you moving. These are the sorts of skills that you are going to want to pick up if you are planning to play Thief-type character. I've played a lot of these types of characters over the years, so I have pretty good idea on how to build them. Pick Locks is the skill that determines how well your character can pick things like Locks, Doors, etc.
