RPGs that influenced me the most...
The biggest one for me is definitely Ultima Underworld. Not only did it have the most advanced 3D engine at the time, but it had a feature set that has ever been matched.
- 3d engine with angled walls and floors, lighting, and allowed full 3D motion like flying.
- NPC reputation with multiple factions
- Visible NPC damage (critters actually showed blood!)
- Equipment degradation and repair (this was visible as well)
- Destructible chests and doors (just like Eschalon)
- And pretty much every other feature that has become standard in RPG's
Even Arx Fatalis didn't do all of that despite being the closest thing to UU ever made.
I started RPG's with Eye of the Beholder 2. The most important ones for me were UU of course, Ultima 7, The Dark Side of Xeen, and Dark Sun.

Hmmm... I haven't played a lot of RPGs but the ones that influenced me the most were the Quest for Glory series(I only finished 1 and 4... shame on me!). The storytelling, character development and voice-acting are top-notch and it's one of those hybrid games: rpg + adventure(a couple of puzzles here and there), produced by Sierra before it started delving into the action genre.
I'd add Fallout and Arcanum but I didn't finish them yet(I'm getting around to completing them soon but I think I'll restart them since I played them about 2 to 3 years ago).

Old school
Way back when... on a C-64.
Ultima III
AD&D Pool of Radiance
Star Command (1988)
Wasteland
Autoduel
Wizardry
Etc
But my most favorite by far was SSI's Wizard's Crown and the sequel Eternal Dagger. Wasn't much on visuals (wer talk'n 8bit here), but tactical combat to the extreme! You had a party of 8 and battles with up to twice that many enemies could take 30 minutes or more. Very detailed and well though out combat system. But it did have a quick combat button that only takes a few seconds.
I still play it every now and then. I use HOXS64 emulator for PC, it's just like the old days! You can get many of the old games mentioned in this thread at www.c64.com. and play them as they were meant to be played. In all their 8-bit glory!!! Ahh, good times, good times..

All that glitters is not gold; all that wander are not lost.
Bard's Tale 1
Dungeon Master (an an Amiga 500, with 1 MB expansion) - incredible back then!
Phantasie 3 (still a great game)
Dragon Wars (amiga emulator works great now)
Might and Magic 1 through 8 (9 was a waste of money for me)
Heroes of Might and Magic 1-3 (4 was a waste of money)
King's Bounty
Wizardry 5
Yendorian Tales

Wizard's Crown.
Anybody else remember the hype from churches that anybody who played DnD, or any RPG that wasn't based on Tolkien's books, was a closet Satanist/Pagan? My parents wouldn't let me play paper DnD with the neighborhood kids, but it was okay (for some reason) to play Wizard's Crown on the C64.
And no ... I didn't grow up to make blood sacrifices or engage in any other sort of satanist/pagan rituals.![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

This thread (its fist post) explains why I like Eschalon
Ultima Underworld II: Labyrinth of Worlds is my favorite RPG of all times. Awesome engine for the early 1990s, fantastic soundtrack, great story, and so much flexibility in exploration.
I also liked Eye of The Beholder series very much (maybe except the 3rd part) - very climatic dungeon crawlers. Some people mentioned Dark Sun. IMHO Darku Sun I: Shattered Lands is also great and one of the most underestimated CRPG. It has a very original settings and interesting plot for a fantasy RPG.
