stealing stuff

it seems like it can be pretty arbitrary what is and is not fair game as far as the contents of chests and cabinets go - chests just outside of houses, or chests in cellars, etc. It would be nice to be aware of whether it would be an act of thievery to take something. The ramifications can be pretty severe - the tavern owner for instance in Aridell caught me taking something out of the desk in the room for rent, and he tried to kill me for it...

Speaking of which, it is pretty absurd that people try to kill you for stealing. Maybe they should just start shunning you (not talking to you).

Actually it makes perfect sense that they'd try to kill you. Look at the situation. Law and order has collapsed. Villages have been wiped out. The people who have been responsible for protecting the law abiding are doing something else. Refugees are all over the place. If you leave the few "safe" areas there are brigands, thieves and worse out there. If you were in such a situation and you'd survived up until that point and you saw someone steal something that was necessary for your possible survival, would you "shun" them from that point onward?

The real absurd part is when an essentially unarmed soft skinned tavern keeper tries to slap you to death for stealing an apple when you're a heavily armed and armored goliath who could step on him.

It seems even more absurd to believe the tavern keeper didnt have a weapon of some type (given the perilous era)...perhaps a cudgel? That seems to be a fantasy staple.

Close the door and save the game before you start looting. It's that simple. The game keeps track of thefts, but it doesn't penalize you yet.
