libpng error: incorrect data check

I've been playing quite a bit of this game (~26 hours so far!), and it's really great. I really appreciate the availability of a quality game for Linux, so thanks!

I'm having a problem, however, that doesn't seem to be addressed in the forum so far. Whenever I enter some map areas, the game crashes back with the following error:

libpng error: incorrect data check

I'm seeing it when I try to enter the screen that I think has the city of Vela on it (i.e. north of Blackwater, west of "Baron's Thicket", etc). It also happens somewhere in the goblin crakamir place, but I don't recall precisely where, and it gives the identical error message, so I think it's probably the same thing. It doesn't matter which side I try to enter from, so far as I can tell, and it has never worked - I've never seen that map area. Any idea as to what's going on? It seems that I'm very much unable to continue with the game and its story without those areas! :)

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm running this on a box running Ubuntu 7.10 with the 2.6.22-14-generic kernel, and the version of libpng I have installed is the one that comes from the 1.2.15~beta5-2ubuntu0.1 package.

Please let me know if there's any other system information or something that I can post that would be useful in tracking down this issue.

Thanks very much.

Same version that I have installed, boogywoogy; I have no such problems. Try reinstalling libpng?

What sort of system are you running on? I presume you're running Gutsy?

Edit: yes, that's the map with Vela.

Yeah, I'm running Gutsy, Ubuntu v.7.10. I've got an Athlon 2600 with 1 GB of RAM and an nForce2 mobo. I've got a GeForce 6600 GT video card.

I tried reinstalling the libpng package, but it didn't fix the problem. Thanks for your suggestions - keep the help coming!

No ideas then, boogywoogy. My system is roughly comparable to yours - bit faster CPU; ATI 9700 Pro instead of your GeForce, VIA based mobo - but similar.

What driver are you using for your videocard?

It sounds to me like the game data might be damaged on your drive, namely the maps that libpng is trying to read. You might want to try and re-extract the game archive (or re-download it, I was able to download my copy twice, not sure whether it's not actually time-limited, though).

The problem somehow seems to have resolved itself... The only thing that I can figure is that maybe the png re-install fixed it, but that for some reason it didn't immediately pick up the change? I don't know. In any case, it works now. I'd recommend re-installing the libpng library for anyone else that has the same issue.

Thanks for all your help!

Good to see the problem appears fixed, boogywoogy. Maybe x needed restarting or a reboot was needed?
