Does killing "innocents" affect the ending?

I finished the game a while back and something has been bugging me. I noticed the Chancellor said something to the effect of "We cannot share the truth with the people because of some of the details of your adventure."

I'm guessing this is generic speech, but it sounds as though it could be based on actions leading up to the ending. (In this play through, I happened to dispatch Lilith and a guard or two along the way.)

Either way, I'd like to suggest (keeping?) this "minor gameplay decisions may affect the precise ending" mechanic for Book II. :)

I played a game where I was reasonably virtuous, Wachunga, and got the same response. I suspect it's more that the Chancellor doesn't want people to know that he could be taken over by a Goblin sorceror, and that while he was taken over, he told a lot of porkies that led to widespread fighting, killing, destruction of towns/cities/military installations etc.

After all, BW feels that the game should reflect real life. Can you name a single real-life politician who wouldn't go to considerable lengths to prevent just such things getting out? ;)

Good point. :)

So far Eschalon certainly has more replayability than many games, but I think adding something like this would increase replayability even further.
