loading saves produces darkness and crash-to-desktop

Have played the game several times today (haven't been productive at doing much ELSE today...) so there have been many launches and exits. Suddenly now, when I launch the game and try to restore a saved adventure, ANY savegame leads me to a screen of my character in total darkness, tinted blue, with no map display. Clicking on any interface buttons produces an instant crash-to-desktop.

I haven't rebooted yet, so it may resolve itself in the morning, but I'm reporting the behavior anyway.

Let me know if the reboot fixes it. I'm betting it will.

Yes, it seems to work again after reboot.

Except that dying of poison while resting also crashed.
