Skill points

I just purchased the MAC version (I am using 10.4) and am pretty new to gaming so sorry if I sound like what my son calls a "nube". So far I am enjoying the game but becoming a little flustered when I can't kill the green salamanders after many repeated tries. I am a fighter in the game and I think level 4 (under 5000 pts). Is there any way to boost the skill points without pitching a tent near town and waiting for enemies to attack? Also the game crashed on me when I was entering the board with the cemetery. Any help on how to move the level process along would be a huge bonus. I saw that a character editor was made for 10.5, is there going to be one built for 10.4?

The current version of Eschalon: Book I is 1.04, jerryv - there is no version 1.05 as yet.

It's not just skill points, it's weapons as well that make a difference in killing monsters. As well, when you're at low levels, don't mix it in with monsters, lure one away at a time and kill it, then another etc.

Attacking monsters in the dark when you're Hiding in Shadows and using Predator Sight is good, because they can't see you (and hence hit you) but you can see them and make a suitable mess of them.

If you have any skills with magic, bows, or thrown weapons, ranged attacks can also be very helpful against Noximanders when you're low level. I don't tend to play games through more than once and I played a Ranger this time, so I never engaged them in melee combat, but presumably even if you used ranged weapons to whittle down their hit points before moving in with a fighter it would still help.
