"mypic.png" - where do you put it?

Hi,

I just bought this game for Mac, and I'm trying to make a custom character portrait, following the instructions in the character creation menu.

I've made a 60 x 60 px PNG file called "mypic.png", as instructed, and placed it in the Eschalon Book I folder in Applications. Sadly, it doesn't appear in the character creation portrait gallery as promised.

What have I done wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Do you get any error message?

Have you cycled through all the portraits to make sure it isn't a the end of the block of portraits?

Have you tried saving the PNG with a different program, just to make sure the format is correct?

Doesn't work here either. No error message, just can't see the pic.

I tried saving from Photoshop and Preview.

OS X Leopard, Intel Mac and german language.

Same with me, except I have English language OSX Leopard.

Could this be an issue with the Mac version of the game?

Could be. I can't test it now but I will on Monday.

Yes, I tried it here and it works fine.

I saved the .png using Gimp. I wonder if you are using the feature correctly: you have to start a new game and choose the custom portrait then. It won't work if you try to add the portrait to your game installation and then look for it to be there when you load your existing game. The custom portrait has to be selected during the creation process.

I would like to change this in the next game- meaning, you could add a mypic.png file to the game's directory and it will automatically override a previously selected portrait. However, for Book I, you have to add the portrait and select it when you are making your character for the first time.

I tested this on a Intel Mac running 10.4. I'll test it on a PPC mac next.

Yes, I'm definitely using it correctly - i.e. I am indeed starting a new game. It just doesn't show up in the list of available portraits.

I haven't tried using this "Gimp" - I'll give that a shot.

Can I clarify what folder I'm supposed to place the file in? The Mac only has the one Eschalon I folder, which I dragged into the Applications folder when I installed the game. Is there some kind of sub-folder this file is meant to be placed in...?

Yes, that is the correct folder.

Make sure you are saving it as "mypic.png" and not "Mypic.png" or something like that. The file name should be all lower case; sometimes upper-case letters don't play well with the file system (especially on Linux, but also sometimes on Mac).

Still no joy - even with Gimp. :(

You tested it on 10.4. Could this be a 10.5 issue?

Could be. I don't have 10.5 here in the studio but I can't imagine that it would break the game. We use .pngs for all the in-game graphics and those load fine.

I am stumped! :?

Does anything look amiss here?

Yes, that does not look right. Is that the demo? Where did you get it from? I see no folders...there should be a data, music, and sound folder inside the Eschalon Book I folder.

I see the Mac Game Store file...I wonder if they repackaged the game? Did you download it from them?

I downloaded the demo from Mac Game Store and then purchased the license from them, unlocking the full game.

That might explain things...

I guess I better re-purchase it direct from you instead?

No...I will download the game from them and see what the problem is. Either way I will make sure you get a working version.
