Wondering about my mage

So, there is one thing I don't have figured out yet about Book 1, and it involves playing as a pure mage. To be specific, we all know that a spell like Fire Dart sometimes fails against a powerful foe (like a Taurax or Acid Grub).
The other day I ran into an Assasin's Ring in a shop in Blackwater. Since I was loaded up with the 20 point Magi Rings at the time, I took a pass on buying it. Now, my question is, would it have influenced my failure rate when using spells?
Sorry if this has been asked before...........

I don't believe so.
Assassin's Rings only affect the
melee ToHit score. I believe spell success/failure is a totally separate 'roll' (i.e. a roll for 'spell resistance success/failure', not a 'ToHit' roll).
So, an Assassin's Ring does you no good if you are a full spell-caster that does not engage in melee fighting.

Like Bernie said, not sounding too Crazy, spells always "hit" so your success or failure is based on the opponent's resistance. No help there from an Assassin's Ring.

I actually was inspired by this topic (and a dearth of other interesting things to do, and that new jpg from Book II) to go back and try Book I again as a mostly pure mage. I never used any weapon other than throwing the occasional flask of Demon Oil. I spent a chunk of the game wearing nothing but sandals and a cloak (and noting amusedly that my character's icon was still fully clothed, despite that). I found it pretty easy, if a bit boring to keep either walking around or camping to regain mana. I did it without any rerolling (which explains the lack of clothing, when I needed that extra 2 gold to buy a spell). Before I went up against Gramuk, I even popped back to town and sold absolutely everything from my inventory except my 12 flasks of demon oil and the Crux.
Personally, I find playing as a ranger variant a little easier (much less of that dull resting), with enough elemental and divine magic to get Air Shield, Predator Sight and Cat's Eyes so I could go the whole game without ever resting (beyond the two nights in the Inns to check out the contents of the drawers, though I could have done that without paying for the rooms, also, I think). It's pretty funny to have a character who goes through the whole game without ever sleeping.

Yes, I want optional nudity!
BW? Option for book II?
I'm not looking for graphic depictions, or anything, it's the thought that counts... .
At any rate, my own most recent run through was also a magic-only character . . . but I haven't gotten very far with him. (It's not an easy role, at any rate. Unlike Kreador's ranger, my character has so far spent way too much time sleeping, which includes a lot of stays in the Aridell inn.) I should get back to it, soon. I wanted to learn all the spells I never got around to learning, as a fighter.

Just one thought about staying in an inn in order to check out the drawers in the room. Apparently those drawers are considered public property just like the barrels that are scattered around. I was desperate to save my money in one game and just walked in and opened the drawer in Aridell. Nobody seemed to care, so I was able to save a whole 15 gold......

The innkeeper probably wasn't where he could see (if the door was open). With one character I opened the door and went to the drawer and opened it. Innkeeper was near the cartographer sitting in his chair. Innkeeper got mad. Luckily I was wise enough to have saved just before opening the drawer so I could restore game from that point.
